< Iron dragon

Iron dragons use a fire-breath based attack, so an anti-dragon shield or dragonfire shield combined with an antifire potion, or just a super antifire potion is essential when fighting them.

Also, if players are wearing a pair of dragon slayer gloves, they will be rewarded with 15% extra Slayer experience when killing these for slayer tasks, in addition to a 10% increase to Attack and Strength levels.

Iron dragons are some of the weaker metallic dragons, with iron scales that are far thicker than normal iron armour. Their fiery breath and sharp claws can be negated by a number of means. I've managed to trap a few in the dungeon I'm guarding.

Magic is the recommended method to use to kill iron dragons, since they are weak to water spells. Using an anti-fire shield or fireshield combined with an anti-fire breath or super anti-fire breath potion leave a player practically unscathed by fire breath. When using both, a caption appears saying "the anti-fire shield and the potion fully protect you from the dragon's breath." This means a player using magic with this strategy should always keep his or her distance from the dragon to be protected from any damage.

The alternative strategy is to use melee. This is recommended if you don't have level 85 herblore for super anti-fire potions and don't own a high-level wand, but can equip a good one-handed weapon such as an abyssal whip.

Magic strategyEdit

Equipment Wear the best mage gear you own. If you have 85+ Herblore, use a polypore staff (for Polypore Strike) or a water battlestaff/mystic water staff or a tome of frost with a wand. If you do not have 85+ Herblore, use a wand and an anti-dragon shield. However as of January 23, 2013, iron dragons are time-consuming to kill with wands at the Grifolic wand/Master wand level, and higher level wands are expensive.

Items to bring:

  • Magic runes (Air and/or water runes for water spells)
  • 1-2 Sharks
  • 3-4 Antifire/super-antifire potions, or more if you're looking to stay a while.
  • Emergency teleport
  • Possible a vecna skull for faster kills, and an unlimited amount of magic boosts.
  • 2 BoB pouches OR 2 Healing Familars
  • Some food if low-level

If fighting them in Brimhaven Dungeon:

  • 875 coins (in money pouch) (If you own Karamja Gloves 3 it's free entry).
  • Hatchet (on toolbelt or any type, best if under adamant)

Skills needed:

NOTE: If you are a lower level than this guide typically recommends, it is very possible to still camp at the Iron Dragons at Brimhaven and be successful. Use the following setup. If you are unable to use the equipment stated below, it is not recommended to kill Iron Dragons.

Action bar set-up
Empty action bar
Wrack
Impact
Combust
Chain
Asphyxiate
Wild Magic
Metamorphosis
Tsunami
Shark
Antifire (4)

Strategy:

You need to equip your anti-dragon shield/dragonfire shield. Drink your magic potion and your antifire potion, and stand at least one step away from the dragon. Turn auto-retaliate on and start to attack the iron dragon. Drink your potions when needed.

Use the abilities as fast as they recharge. Wrack's recharge time makes it possible to use that between other abilities, i.e. Wrack, Impact, Wrack, Combust, for fast adrenaline-building. If you have 50%-75% adrenaline and the dragon is almost dead, use a threshold ability. If you're at or near 100%, continue using basic abilities and auto-attacks, and switch to your next target without picking up any drops in order to start combat with an ultimate ability, preferably the water-type Tsunami ability.

Melee strategyEdit

Melee is not recommended, as the dragons are weak to Magic and as such your chance to hit is greatly diminished. However if you have neither level 85 herblore for super antifire potions nor a high-level wand, but do have a high-level one-handed melee weapon, it can be a useful alternative. When using melee, you are within range of the dragon's melee attack, but this can be almost completely negated using prayer.

Equipment:

Food will not be required, since when using antifire and Protect from Melee or Deflect Melee, damage from fire breath will be avoided and the dragon's melee attack will only hit for 1.

Action bar set-up

You can also add your potions. The healing abilities are for use if you accidently let your prayer or anti-fire potions expire.

Empty action bar
Slice
Sever
Fury
Backhand
Slaughter
Assault
Berserk
Regenerate (ability)
Rejuvenate

High level

At high levels, wielding dual drygores and using boosts it is possible to dispose of Iron dragons extremely fast. Soul split will maintain life points. Super anti-fire is needed, but slayer tasks will be completed within a few doses, if not banking drops. Prayer potions will also be required.
