Hunter training is click-intensive, but very fast at higher levels. It has the potential to be profitable, and a viable method of generating money.

EquipmentEdit

The equipment that a player wears while hunting can have an effect on the chance of a successful capture as well as the mobility of the player.

Bonus experienceEdit

The enhanced Yaktwee stick grants you a 5% xp boost in ALL hunter activities in which you can wield the stick. This is obtained by hunting charm sprites. It will take 2-3 hours of hunting there, at a reasonable xp-rate, so it is recommended that you do this at level 72. See its page for more info on Charm Sprites

With the addition of the mini-game Heist you can use the rewards points to collect bonus experience in Hunter.

Hunter specific equipmentEdit

Players can wear Hunter gear specific to each of the four major Hunter areas in order to greatly increase the chances of a successful catch. It is recommended a player crafts or purchases the appropriate Hunter gear. The increased catch rate is quite valuable. The table below summarizes the Hunter gear by region.

Additional equipmentEdit

Hunting often involves a significant amount of running. Weight-reducing clothing will make it possible to run further, indirectly increasing the rate of obtaining experience. The following items will reduce a player's weight:

InventoryEdit

Your inventory for hunting is different depending on what you are hunting. For example, it is pointless to bring a Butterfly net if you are hunting salamanders in the Haunted Woods. Additionally, there are a number of items unrelated to the Hunter skill that players choose to bring to work on other skills simultaneously.

Hunter related itemsEdit

Below is a list of the hunting gear needed for most types of hunting and the type of hunting it is used for:

Note that the recommended amount of traps is 5 at a time. There is no use for carrying more than 5 and as such it is not adviseable to carry more than 5. Less, at hunter levels lower than 80, is an option since you cannot use the extra ones anyway. At least 2 are recommended in case you make a mistake and lose a trap.

Note: Most of the hunting gear can be bought in two of the three hunting shops. The first shop is Aleck's Hunter Emporium in Yanille. The second is the Hunter Shop in Nardah. Ayleth Beaststalker's Hunting Supplies Shop has a few basic supplies for those new to the hunter skill.

Non-hunter related itemsEdit

Below is a list of the additional items that a player may want in order to train other skills simultaneously with hunting:

  • Bonecrusher may be used to train Prayer if hunting prey that drops bones.
  • Herbicide may be used to train Herblore if hunting prey that drops herbs. Note that the herbs will be consumed upon being dropped.

Options for trainingEdit

This table lists various methods of hunting, all of which are viable to an extent.

Notice that just because a method requires a higher hunter level does not imply that it is more effective than a method available for a lower Hunter level. A creature that yields less experience but also takes less time per catch may prove more effective than a creature that yields more experience at a lower rate.

Notes:

  • Remember, if a bird swoops down on your snare without getting trapped, then the snare must be taken down and set back up or it won't work.
  • Do not log out without picking up your bird snare, or it will disappear.

Advantages:

  • Good money.
  • Using guam tar as bait also significantly reduces training time.
  • Using the trapdoor behind the Canifis bar to reach the Hollows significantly reduces the risk of health loss (requires completion of the In Search of the Myreque quest).


Disadvantages:

  • The area south of Canifis is dangerous. To protect against ghasts, take a druid pouch and a blessed silver sickle and make sure your prayer is full, although reasonably high levelled players should have no trouble training here without druid pouches or any kind of food.
  • It is a good idea to have a combat level of 41 or higher to protect from snails .


Notes:

  • Hunt at the "Hunter Training" symbol on the map to the south (and a little west) of the entrance to the Agility Course.
  • When you trap a swamp lizard, you get a weapon (also called a swamp lizard) that is the tertiary ingredient in creating swamp titan pouches.
  • It's a good idea to bring a blessed silver sickle to prevent swamp decay.

  • These drop big bones and Tatty larupia fur or Larupia fur.
  • For the biggest profit, it is advised to only take the Larupia fur which is worth 9,456 gp and not the tatty larupia fur which is worth 287 gp. This is a decent way of making money, as well as training hunter.

Advantages:

  • It will not fly away if you log out but it will if you teleport.


Notes:

  • You have to bring 500 coins to rent the falcon.
  • In order to equip a falcon you must have your weapon, shield, and glove spots free.
  • The Falconry area is in the Piscatoris Woodlands Hunter area in the north-westernmost corner of RuneScape.
  • During this training, the more room the better for holding the pesky bones and fur that you get when you capture them.
  • Try to memorize spawn positions of the kebbits.
  • Groups of Spotted kebbits spawn in the central spawning areas, and single Spotted kebbits spawn on the side areas.
  • You can bury the bones and drop the fur as soon as your inventory is full. Try using Quickkeys to drop the furs while hunting, as this will save valuable training time. Also, if a bonecrusher is available to you, use it, as it speeds up the hunting process greatly.

  • Must complete the Hunt for Red Raktuber quest.
  • At level 50 by using a net trap (which you can find in the shipwreck in the south-eastern corner of the hunting area) you will get faster experience.
  • At level 56 you can box trap. They are faster than net trapping, but gives 100 exp less than net trapping.
  • You do not have to bring fishing net and rope, there is a damaged boat east of the penguin hunting area that has crates that supplies fishing net, rope, knife and driftwood (enough to do deadfall and net traps).

Advantages:

  • Not usually crowded.
  • Bait is stackable and inexpensive (Marrentill tar)
  • There are two spots each with four nets in close proximity, and another with two nets.

Disadvantages:

  • Waterskins needed, wear desert boots and/or a knife to cut cactus to extend time between drinks needed. However, when dressed in desert clothing, one or two waterskins needed before catching full inventory (one is sufficient at Hunter level 55 - confirmed multiple times (catching with 3 net traps, no bait used))
  • Aggressive level 42 desert lizards wander around the area (but not inside the hunting area itself), take caution on approach if you are a lower level.

Notes:

  • It is not recommended to bank these, as there is little monetary gain from it. There are many better ways of making money while training hunter.

Advantages:

  • Can be used to train ranged or sold to people training ranged.
  • Also used as an item for Summoning.
  • Stackable: fewer trips to the bank.

  • Usually empty, players tend to prefer Carnivorous Chinchompas.

Disadvantages:

  • If accidentally attacked, will explode and deal 20 life points of damage to player if in its blast radius.
  • Relatively hard to catch at low levels.


Notes:

  • For maximum experience, bring a hatchet and knife to a do deadfall trap at the same time.

  • There are two favourable spawns on the west edge of the Falconry area.
  • Try hunting these in combination with Spotted Kebbits for maximum efficiency,

  • Not easily sold, sold for little money.

Notes:

  • Head to the Red Salamander hunter area, located West of the spirit tree near the Battlefield of Khazard, or you can walk there by teleporting to Castle Wars Arena and walking North.
    Go to the western spot, (west of altar), located at the edge of the road where the graveyard is, and use the trees there. Focus on the three trees that are close together for the fastest XP. This gains 20-40k more xp per hour than the eastern spot.
  • Any camouflage equipment is desirable, although not necessary.
  • If you can't use the spirit tree, bring a stack of cheap runes (air, body, etc.) and use the Ourania Runecrafting Altar. Keep in mind that if you do this, you'll be roughly trading 1 rune for 272 Hunter experience. This is actually a much quicker way to bank, and if you bring a stack of very cheap runes (such as mind runes) you might actually earn more money through the time saved. Banking, however, is not recommended.
  • Lacking any other method, you can simply release the salamanders if you are more concerned about experience rather than money. This is highly recommended as there is little money in hunting red salamanders, but high XP rates can be achieved.

  • You can use a ranged weapon to shoot the Chinchompas if they run far away to increase the Hunter experience you get per hour.


Disadvantages:

  • If accidentally attacked, will explode and deal twenty damage to player if in its blast radius.


Notes:

  • Currently devoid of both bots and players despite past infamy.
  • Set the box traps around the chinchompa respawns and try to find a relatively high population world as the Chinchompas respawn faster when more people are using that particular server.
  • These are south-west of the crimson swifts in Feldip Hills.

At level 95, the really agile hunters (level 90 agility) may hunt the King of the butterflies: the Black Warlock. These little critters give 650 experience per catch, as well as 125 agility xp. The xp rates rival the optimal rates while grenwall hunting, and is considered one of the best ways to train hunter. An advantage over hunting grenwalls is that there is no need to bank while hunting these. Disadvantages are that you need 90 agility, and miss out on a huge chunk of profit.

89 - 99 Crimson skillchompa

Popular under players since it requires no preparation, bait, or high agility levels. This method grants a decent profit of around 700k-1m per hour. Once caught, crimson skillchompas transform into stackable crimson skillchompas, which can be wielded to give benefits while skilling.

Grenwall hunting is a great way of gaining huge chunks of xp, as well as making the big money. This can be around 200k Hunter XP , as well as 2m+ in profit, per hour. Grenwall hunting is viable at lower levels (starting at 77), but this requires a Scentless potion from Herblore Habitat, or smoking the traps, and an Arctic bear familiar. Hunting grenwalls can be done at the |Private hunting area if you have the tickets from the Big Chinchompa D&D. If you do not have the tickets, and are not very experienced with hunting, it is recommended that you play the D&D to obtain the tickets. If you are an experienced hunter, the hunter area in Tirannwn is a viable option as well. If hunting here, keep in mind where the grenwalls spawn. For each spawn, put one box trap north, and one box trap south of the spawning spot. Put your fifth box trap halfway between both spawning points. The grenwalls spawn quickly, so even though they seem to be much further apart, the xp rates are still about 150k (and upwards if really experienced) per hour. This method is one of the fastest, and the most profitable way to level 99 hunter.

Notes:

At high levels, people may prefer to bring a Beast of Burden rather than an Arctic bear to carry their pawya meat and extend their trips. When hunting in Tirannwn, people also may decide to buy their pawya meat straight from the players that are hunting for pawya there. This saves banking time, as the Grenwall spikes are stackable

They are relatively easy to catch, although, they seem to escape from traps often. You can use ferrets to flush white rabbits out of their hole, set two rabbit snares infront north and south rabbit holes, then flush the western/eastern rabbit hole. This is optional, but it maximizes the experience.

Another way is to simply catch and release the Ferrets. Many players choose doing this, since it's easier, and, arguably faster. (Remember to bind the ferrets to the action bar for faster releasing of full inventories).

Spotted kebbits are the easiest variety of kebbits to catch with falconry. To catch the kebbits, the player simply needs to click on them. The falcon will swoop down and capture the kebbits. If caught, a yellow arrow will appear on top of the falcon and the kebbit, this means you may go pick it up. If failed, the falcon will return to you. This is a great way of hunting, as it gives a high hourly xp rate. It is recommended to drop the furs you get, as they are practically worthless. If you have a bonecrusher, bring it as it will speed up the process severely.

50-59

Penguins (after Hunt for Red Raktuber)

They have a great exp/hour rate. It is not necessary to bring net trap and ropes because there is an abandoned boat to the east of the hunter area that supplies 120 net traps and rope. There is a option to hand over KGP agents to Jim, but it's not recommended since it gives only 2 exp for each agent. At level 56 it is possible box trap, which is faster than net trapping, because they rarely miss the trap; however, it gives less experience than net trapping. They do not give any profit however.


At level 70 hunter, it's possible get up to 60-70k/hr when net trapping with 4 traps.

59 - 80 Red Salamander 272 40.000-55.000 Just south of the Ourania Runecrafting Altar cave entrance, north of the observatory. 4 ropes, 4 small fishing nets.

Note that there are 2 locations, each with 4 trapable trees (you can use 4 traps at just level 60). If you are not at level 60 yet, it might be a good idea to bring a hunter potion to brigde the level-gap. At level 60 Hunter, you can make an expected 70-90k Hunter xp/hour using 4 nets.

63 - 77 Carnivorous Chinchompa 265 75.000-90.000 Feldip Hills (Fairy Ring: A•K•S) 4 or 5 box traps

The areas of hunting are not nearly as crowded since the bot nuke. Red Chinchompa's used to be infamous for being a botting place, so mostly devoid of players these days. Is still viable at lower levels (63) but then, the use of an Arctic bear familiar is helpful.

66 - 77 Pawya 400 75.000 (with banking) - 90.000 (with fruitfall) Private hunting area, Tirannwn 4 box traps and an inventory of papayas

Hunting Pawyas is a potentially profitable way of training hunter. You can sell the pawya meat on the G.E., or possibly to the grenwall hunters in the area. You can also decide to keep your pawya meat if you plan on hunting for grenwalls at higher levels. The setup is easy: you set and bait 4 box traps. Be careful NOT to eat the papayas, as that would be a shame.

Notes:

  • Players with access to a fruit bat familiar may want to bring that rather than an Arctic bear, as the fruitfall scroll has a fair chance of producing papayas thus extending your hunting trip greatly.
69 - 80 Dashing Kebbit, Dark Kebbit 156 and 132, respectively 80.000 Piscatoris Falconry (Fairy Ring: A•K•Q) 500 coins or more.

Dashing kebbits are more difficult to catch than spotted kebbits and dark kebbits. To catch the kebbits, the player simply needs to click on them. The falcon will swoop down and capture the kebbit. If caught, a yellow arrow will appear on top of the falcon and the kebbit, which means you may go pick it up. If failed, the falcon will return to you. Despite common belief, this is actually one of the better ways of training hunter in the mid-70's, but it demands a lot of attention.

74 - 80 Igneous Jadinko 465 90.000 Herblore Habitat 4 Marasamaw plant

To get to the hunter area, do one of two things:

Hunting in the Herblore Habitat can be very rewarding (xp-wise), but there is no money to gain. To attract Igneous Jadinkos, plant a blue vine blossom, a lergberry bush, an orange tree and construct a thermal vent. As the jadinkos are instanced, you don't have to worry about other players stealing your prey. The marasamaw plants work just like box traps, and there is no bait required to hunt these creatures. Hunting these creatures can amount to approximately 100k xp/hour.

80-95 Draconic Jadinko 525 110.000-150.000 Herblore Habitat 5 marasamaw plants

Draconics are an alternative to butterflies/grenwalls at high levels. The xp rates are comparable to Snowy Knight butterflies, and as with those, there is no profit. You do have to use juju hunter potions every 10 minutes to keep on hunting, which may make it unappealing for some players to train for longer periods here. Training with draconic jadinkos is pretty good between levels 80 and 90, although most players prefer other alternatives. After level 95, it is a much better idea to go hunting for Black Warlocks or Grenwalls, because those are significantly better ways of training hunter.

80-85 Ruby harvest 300 80.000-90.000 Piscatoris Hunter area none

At level 80, a viable way of training hunter is to catch butterflies barehanded. Ruby harvests give 300 xp per catch, as well as 50 agility xp per catch. Catching butterflies is often seen as a fun and different alternative to hunting grenwalls or jadinkos. The xp rates for ruby harvests are a little lower than for grenwalls, but rival the xp you get for Igneous jadinkos if you count the agility xp as well. To catch this butterfly barehanded, you need an agility level of 75 as well as the required hunter level.

85-90 Sapphire Glacialis 400 90.000-100.000 Rellekka Hunter area none

As with Ruby Harvests, this is a fun and different alternative to the common methods of training. Per catch, these butterflies give 400 hunter xp and 70 agility xp. Hourly rates are comparable to Igneous jadinkos, but with the added bonus of about 1/4th of your hunter xp in agility as well. Therefor, hunters often choose this method. Another reason hunters are keen on butterflies, is that this requires no banking. This does require an agility level of 80.

90-95 Snowy Knight 500 110.000-120.000 Rellekka Hunter area none

At level 90, hunters with high agility find it worthwhile to hunt Snowy Knight butterflies. They live in the same area as the Sapphire Glacialis, and this is why people usually hunt the two in tandem. Hunting solely Snowy Knights requires knowledge of their spawning pattern, which most people understand after a few catches. This method is really great for xp, as it gives up to 155k hunter and about 33k agility per hour.

Other huntingEdit

Hunting with brawlersEdit

There is only one method that is really worth using hunting brawling gloves for. That is hunting the black salamanders. Black salamanders are ~300k xp per hour with brawling gloves. They normally give 304 xp each and you will have ~247 caught per hour. No profit is made since the player is releasing the salamanders to increase efficiency. Lasting for ~275 catches, the gloves can potentially give 300k xp per hour for ~1.1 hours. Be wary of players in the wilderness that may attack you out of spite.

DivinationEdit

With the release of the Divination skill, Hunter experience equal to the player's Hunter level multiplied by 10 can be obtained by capturing chronicle fragments. It would take 15,057 fragments to get from level 1-99 Hunter. This makes training Divination a good way to train both skills simultaneously. A notification will appear in chat when one escapes from the spring.

Protean TrapsEdit

With the recent release of Protean traps, a new way of gaining heaps of experience has arrived. If you have these traps, obtainable from Treasure Hunter, they act as Bird snares, Box traps or Marasamaw plants when deployed. Although you gain no resources from this, the experience earned is excellent. It is advised to use these traps on Grenwalls due to the fact that each successful capture gives 125% experience (1375xp), while each failed capture gives 50% experience (550xp). These boosts stack with the Enhanced Yaktwee Stick's xp boost, effectively raising the xp for one capture to 1443.75xp and a failed capture to 577.5. Note that these do not work on the private hunting grounds, and therefore have to be placed in Tirannwn. There, you have the possibility of catching pawyas as well, but they still give a decent amount of xp. It is not advised to use these in the Herblore Habitat, due to the large quantity of Common Jadinkos that will reduce your xp rate.
