Help:Searching

From the RuneScape Wiki, the wiki for all things RuneScape

The search system of RuneScape Wiki is designed to be efficient for the widest range of users. Most of the time, you will find exactly what you are looking for by typing the appropriate title of the subject in the search box to the left. For example, to search for the crystal bow, simply type crystal bow into the search box. You will be sent to the crystal bow page.

The box also picks up on slang and shorthand: Perhaps you'd like to search for the rune two-handed sword. This is known by many names in RuneScape, such as rune two-hander, rune 2h sword, and r2h. Editors know this and have proactively provided redirects. Therefore, a search for r2h will send you to rune two-handed sword. You will notice a note on the top of the page, too, that says (Redirected from R2h).

For the sake of granularity, the Wiki also uses these redirects to direct users to a broad page when searches are too specific. The Wiki does not have a page on the exact item bucket of slime because, of course, the page would not have much content. However, a search for bucket of slime will redirect to bucket, which contains more than enough information on buckets of ectoplasm, milk, sand, and anything else that can be held in buckets.

On the other hand, some searches may too general. A popular search is for dragon. In RuneScape, though, dragon is a very vague concept. The metal? The monster? The hide? Therefore, a search for dragon will result in a disambiguation page that allows you to choose which one you mean.

The search is also designed to identify misspellings.

However, this system is not perfect, and sometimes you may find yourself unable to access the page you seek. Firstly, you should ensure that the spelling is correct. Even though many common misspellings are understood, the Wiki will not know that you meant Wanted! when you typed Ssqantees!!! If you are sure the spelling is correct, we may not have the page. As the RuneScape Wiki is constantly under-development, many pages may not yet exist. It is advisable to start the article you seek, if you know a little bit about it, so that other editors can build upon your work. If you do not have an account, you may leave a message on your talk page alerting editors that a page you are looking for does not exist. If you do have an account (sign up), you should speak with another editor about content-building.

Contents

Wikis give you multiple methods to search the content.

Wikis using the Monaco (latest) skin have a search bar in the toolbar on the left hand side of the screen below the wiki logo.

There are three main methods of searching a wiki:

  • Visit Special:Search either:
    • Via clicking the search box arrow when the sidebar's search box is empty, or
    • Via a link.
  • Enter a term in the search box, then press return or click the search arrow. If any matching article names are found, you will be taken straight there. If not, you will be taken to Special:Search.
  • Use an Inputbox - see below.

Creating a search box

To add a search box to any article, just type:

<inputbox>
type=search
</inputbox>

It will produce this box:

See Help:Inputbox for more details.
