Giant Mole

The Giant mole (Talpidae Wysonian) is found in the Falador Mole Lair, just under Falador Park. The player will need a spade to get there and a light source to see. Players are advised to be careful while fighting this monster, as it may put the player's light out, so a tinderbox is vital. This is not necessary if the player carries a covered light source, such as a lantern or a Seers' headband.

Currently, the Giant mole is the highest levelled non-aggressive non-quest monster.

[edit] Giant Mole Strategy

The weakness of the Giant Mole is Ranged and Stab attacks. So a Dragon dagger (p++) and a ranger can be good additions to a team. A Zamorakian spear is also extremely useful for its stab bonus. It can also be poisoned by an Adamant dagger (p++) or Rune dagger (p++). However using a metal as low as adamant is not recommended as the mole has a fairly high defence. The Giant Mole is nearly immune to magic so using magic is not a good idea.

At half health, the Giant Mole starts digging around the cavern to escape. There are several different locations that the mole can resurface around the cave. These are the resurfacing locations. There is one in the centre, one in the top left of the cave, one in the top right, one on the hill, one below the hill, 2 on the far right of the cave and one in the centre. This is where teams come in handy; station each member at different junctions in the dungeon, and when the Mole comes around, they can hit them as much as possible before he leaves. You can use a Summoning familiar to aid in finding the Giant Mole. For example, if your Mithril minotaur attacks the mole, when it digs, it will move to where the Giant Mole dug to.The Spirit terrorbird is the best choice since it you can use the Tireless run scroll. You can also use the familiar Bull ant and its Unburden scroll to store items, auto-attack the mole, and restore your run energy based on your Agility level. The Giant Mole's digging can put out an unprotected light source, so bring a tinderbox if using a candle or torch. Covered light sources such as the Bullseye lantern and Candle lantern are not affected. Also, the mole faces the way it is going to dig, so players can usually find the general digging direction just by seeing which way it faces before digging (Note that when the mole digs, it sometimes covers your screen with dirt for a few seconds, making it hard to make out the direction).

If you are soloing the Giant Mole, you should make sure that you poison the Giant Mole, then after it escapes you should track it down and wait for it to die due to the poison. This saves you from running a lot and losing the drop if it dies right after it has dug another hole. However, sometimes if the mole dies right after digging, the drop will appear right at your feet, but this does not appear to co-operate with LootShare well. Also bring food or use Protect from Melee, since it easily can hit 21 and often. It is also highly recommended to have a second spade and lantern, so if you die somehow you can easily come back to retrieve your items.

[edit] Solo Method

Another good method to use is the Explorer's ring method, where players fight the mole in their best Prayer armour, a Zamorakian spear, a Spirit terrorbird familiar, and Protect from Melee activated. The player's inventory should include the necessities as well as an Explorer's ring 3, Tireless run scrolls, and a Falador shield 3 (players do not actually wield the shield, as the spear is a two-handed weapon. Shields 1 and 2 work as well but less efficiently.) A high Prayer level is recommended.

Using a set of Verac's armour is also highly effective. The set effect will hit through the Giant Mole's high defences, and the combined factors of the weapon having the Stab attack style available and the added prayer bonus make this a valid and strong choice.

Player should fight the mole as usual, making sure that the terrorbird familiar is attacking the mole as well so it will follow the mole when it digs (You can also right click the mole just before it digs and select the 'attack' option, making sure you click somewhere else when you get close.). Once the player runs out of prayer points (which should take around 5-10 kills, depending on the player's Prayer level) they may utilise the following options to recharge their prayer:

  • Use teleport spells, or other means of transport, to get as near an altar as you can and run to it.
  • Leave the dungeon and run to the Taverley or Heroes' Guild altars.
  • A particularly effective method to recharge prayer is to use the Kandarin Teleport on the Ardougne Cloak, which teleports a player very close to an altar. After recharging, the player can use a teleport tab or runes to return to Falador, which at that point the player can bank items and return to the Falador Mole Lair. The Ardougne Cloak also has the added benefit of a prayer bonus, allowing for prayers to last longer before needing to recharge.

After recharging prayer points via the above methods, the player should teleport to the cabbage patch or Falador, and run back to the Giant Mole to continue killing it. By this time, the mole should have respawned.

Players may also find it useful to use the mole's bulk against it by trapping it in one of the many corners of the lair's erratically shaped walls, to range or halberd it from a safe distance.

Note that the Giant Mole's drops are pretty similar to that of the King Black Dragon, with the exception of the Draconic Visage, Dragon bones and Black Dragonhide. Also, the King black dragon drops 4 charms at a time compared to the Giant Mole's 2 charms drop.
