The Genie appears after players have selected a genie lamp from the random event gift. The Genie appears near players and gives them an experience lamp, which may be rubbed to raise a selected skill's experience by 10 times the current level of the particular. For example, if the player has level 30 in Herblore, they would gain 300 Herblore experience if the skill is chosen.
Therefore, a lamp can be useful in gaining Prayer and Slayer experience, especially at higher levels, where conventional methods provide very little experience. This is also a good way to level up the Summoning skill without requiring to spend gold coins.
Prior to the random event updates he appeared as a random event in his own right and gave the lamp to players when spoken to. If ignored he would teleport them to a random location.
[edit] Spirits of the Elid
In the Spirits of the Elid quest, the Genie which resides in the cavern is the evil brother of the Random event Genie. This Genie has a craving for human souls. During the quest, he requests an adventurer to give him the "soul" of Awusah the Mayor. The adventurer agrees, and gives the Genie Awusah's sole.

- The Genie is now a thing of the past, as the random event has been discontinued. When Jagex mentioned that Random events were being reviewed, many people campaigned to save the Genie random event (i.e. not to remove the random event). Although it doesn't appear as a random event anymore, if you choose the experience lamp from the random event gift, the Genie will appear to give the player the lamp.
- The examine text from the Genie's cave is a line from Disney's Aladdin, when the Genie mentions about the cramped living space within the lamp.
- For a time after the release of RuneScape HD, the random event Genie's chat head was still rendered with the old low detail version of character chat heads. However, this has since been fixed.
- If ignored the Genie would spread the players inventory on the floor
- A hidden update on 12 August gave the Genie random event interface a new look.
- The genie appears to have the same face paint as Vannaka (met in Tutorial Island and as a medium level Slayer master).
- Unlike most NPCs, its hairstyle cannot be used.
