Free-to-play Hitpoints training

From the RuneScape Wiki, the wiki for all things RuneScape

Click here for some statistics about training hitpoint and combat level.

Hitpoint is a passive measure of fighting qualities of a player. Hitpoint experience is gained in all combat involving actual damage to the target for free players.

Strictly speaking, for every damage dealt by either melee, ranged or magic, 1.333 or 4/3 experience is gained. Then the only variation for fighting power not involving hitpoint at all is curse spells and prayer.

There is no quest that increase hitpoint experience in F2P world, but some quests increasing combat stats, meaning completing the quests would decrease the hitpoint level for that combat level.

There are mainly two methods of training hitpoint, that are increasing or decreasing the hitpoint as far as possible.

[edit] Combat Level and Hitpoints

According to the article combat Level, a formula is available for calculation of combat level, which can be rewritten as:

Approximate Free-to-play combat level
Denote math be level of certain skill,
Melee combat level math
Ranged combat level math
Magic combat level math
This table indicates several important things
  • Defence, prayer and hitpoint levels are always taken into account for calculation of combat level. A pure should avoid training defence, hitpoint and prayer.
  • Approximately, attaining 43 prayer for Protect from melee costs 5.375 combat level increase.
  • Approximately, attaining 40 defence for rune armour costs 10 combat level increase. This also gives 12408 hitpoint XP except Dragon Slayer is completed.
  • If the total level of Attack and Strength are equal, Melee combat level is not affected. This gives rise of variation of hitpoint XP with identical combat level.
  • The rating factor of Attack plus Strength, Ranged, Magic is 2:3:3, if the ratio of respective levels 3:2:2 is attained, the character is said as "Fully Tanked" because the hitpoint experience is maximised.

[edit] Decreasing hitpoint

Decreasing hitpoint is an important measure for pures mainly, because hitpoint can directly contribute to their combat level.

[edit] Mage pures

Mage pures can have as little hitpoint experience as possible, mainly due to the fact some magic can avoid hitpoint experience completely.

Defence should be untrained. These skills are independent of attacker skills, thus the combat level will be kept very low. Attack, strength and ranged should be carefully trained, probably by completing Vampire Slayer and using antique lamps to earn experience, in order to incur as little hitpoint XP as possible. By sacrifacing 5.25 combat level a character can attain 45 prayer, which is vital in many situations like PvP.

[edit] Ranged pures

No matter how a ranged pure trains, 1/3 of ranged experience is always added to hitpoint experience. Thus defence should be kept as low as possible: in F2P case, either 1, 20, or 40 defence.

[edit] Melee pures

Excluding some quests which can directly give some melee combat experience, 1/3 of melee experience is always added to hitpoint experience, especially for high-levelled players. The level difference between attack and strength should be as large as possible, and defence should be kept as low as possible.

[edit] Effect of prayer

Prayer carries 1/8 bonus of combat level. Attaining 43 prayer for all protection prayers causes increase of 5.375 combat levels. Prayer is the least important stat involving both hitpoint and combat level as it carries the lowest ratio in combat level, and training prayer doesn't train hitpoint as well. The saved combat level can be used for training prayer, as it can be surprising to opponents.

[edit] Training methods

[edit] Curse spells

To train magic without training hitpoint, the best way is to repeatedly cast curse spells, which can give magic experience only. The spells Confuse, Weaken, Curse can be cast at minimum level 3, 11, 19 respectively, giving experience of 13, 20.5, 29 XP respectively. The best place to train curse spells is at Lumbridge combat hall, in which the magic dummies are capable to be multi-casted.

[edit] Failed combat spells

Another way to train magic without training hitpoint is casting splashed combat spells. Strike spells, as the weakest kind of the missile, hit very low and have low cost. Earth strike or fire strike can be used for this purpose, and wearing full metal armour is essential for splashing, except attacking the magic dummies, which gives only 0.1 hitpoint XP per damage dealt.

[edit] High Alchemy

If fund is available, high alchemy is a good choice to train magic without increasing hitpoint experience. Unless you want to maximise the profit, oversupplied goods like hard leather body can be substituted for alching.

[edit] Quests

Witch's Potion

This quest gives 325 experience capable to raise magic level from 1 to 4, making cursed spells training available without having to use missile spells to train first.

Imp Catcher

This quest gives 875 experience capable to raise magic level from 1 to 8, making cursed spells training available without having to use missile spells to train first.

Vampire Slayer

4825 attack experience is given upon completion of quest, which is vital for decreasing hitpoint level for getting 40 attack faster.

Dragon Slayer

This quest is only available for melee pures training some of defence and strength. The defence level must be lower than 33 in order to attain minimum defence level of 40 after the quest. This quest yields 18650 strength and defence experience upon completion of quest. Since completing this quest would cause the defence level and strength level be at least 33, it is not popular with pures.

[edit] Antique lamps and one-use lamps

Jobs can be taken from the tutors, for every 15 jobs finished, 1 antique lamp is awarded giving XP equal to 25 times the current level of particular skill. By theory, if all resources are bought from Grand exchange, it takes 2.5 playing hours to receive a single lamp. Please notice a minimum level of 20 (4470 experience) of a particular skill is needed to use the lamp.

One-use lamps include Lumbridge and Draynor Diary lamps, giving 500, 1000, 1500 XP for beginner, easy and medium diaries, which the last one can only be attained with 31 magic; Misthalin Training Centre of Excellence gives 2 lamps with 500 XP each; holiday event lamp/experience awards, which is discontinued for F2P players; 2 lamps from Sir Vant after Learning the Ropes is completed, giving 250 XP each.

[edit] Varrock dummies

They provide attack experience until level 8, and doesn't give any hitpoint experience.

[edit] Tanking strategy

This section is to provide guide to maximise the hitpoint as a non-pure, also known as Tanking strategy, without increasing combat level at large rate. Tanking strategy also provides a basic idea to balance a character perfectly or attaining minimum combat level as a non-pure.

To Tank, as mentioned in combat level, the ratio of Attack plus strength, magic, ranged should be 3:2:2, while the experience difference between Attack plus strength should be large. For spells, see the sub-paragraph below. There are also some advices on quests involving combat experience.

[edit] Quests

To tackle quests with combat experience as award, the skills which the quest reward offers should be temporarily abandoned. Below is a list for tackling quest rewards:

  • Vampire Slayer: 4825 Attack experience is given, which can increase attack level from 1 to 20, or cause level increase until 43 attack.
  • Witch's potion: 325 Magic experience is given, which can increase magic level from 1 to 4, or cause level increase until 15 magic.
  • Imp catcher: Similar to Witch's Potion except the experience is more.
  • Dragon slayer: 18650 Strength and Defence experience is given, which can increase combat level from 1 to 33, 4 levels increase until level 41, 3 until level 44, 2 until level 49, or 1 until 56 strength and defence. The reward of Dragon Slayer may also directly increase combat level, due to the fact defence is an independent skill. It is strongly recommended to have less than 33 defence before completing the quest unless defence is purposely trained, since upon completion, the 18650 defence experience awarded would push the defence level over 40, which is undesired, unless defence level is already lower than 33. Attack, magic and ranged should be trained before completing the quest.

[edit] Usage of spells

To attain higher hitpoint, non-pures can cast any missile spells to NPCs with very large hitpoint supply, like lesser demons, although blast spells tend to have a slightly lower ratio of hitpoint experience to magic experience gained. Avoid usage of curse spells, never train at the dummies and wear the best equipment mage gear to train to ensure damage is dealt properly. Avoiding overuse of Fist of Guthix is also important, as players tend to use Protect from Magic, causing the hitpoint experience gained much more slowly.
