The recent 2012 Easter event has shown that there is some disagreement over what time zone should be used in articles to show start times of events. There is currently no policy covering this, which makes it hard to justify reverts back to the UTC times currently displayed on the article.

I am proposing a new addition to the style guide concerning this situation.

The time zone used to indicate event start and end times in game should be UTC, as this is a constant time zone that does not need to be adjusted for daylight savings time, as well as the one that this wiki uses and the one that Jagex servers run on.

This will probably not stop the IPs from changing it to BST (or BST incorrectly labelled as GMT), or whatever time zone they prefer, but it will give regular editors a reason to point them to when they revert. AnselaJonla 11:14, April 3, 2012 (UTC)

Support - Don't even get me started. After running events in clans for several years... *shudders at time zone memories*. After Jagex came up with the new forums/website layout, they changed all their times to UTC thankfully. We should just go with that, it's logical. Support - As someone who is sick of Americans assuming there is only one time zone, and that England uses that time zone, I support.

Support - UTC should be the only time used unless it is intended to be used in only 1 specific timezone, which should really only be for player run events, as on that page people kept adding in EST as well Template:Signatures/Ciphrius Kane 12:48, April 3, 2012 (UTC)

Support - I find it easier to go by UTC since the servers never change on both Wikia and on any of the RuneScape servers than Central Time in the USA. I mean, everyone can see the displayTimer in the GlobalNavigation bar that is always updating as UTC. I don't understand why people try to put things in BST when UTC is how the events are determined most of the time. Ryan PM 15:09, April 3, 2012 (UTC)

2 reasons why not. 1) It's labelled at UTC in the GlobalNavigation bar. 2) Some people don't know the difference between GMT and BST; I had to educate someone in the chat about it just yesterday.

UTC (Co-ordinated Universal Time) sounds better to me. Less chance anyone tries to accuse us of only catering to Brits.

If I wanted to make that accusation I'd point to the spelling guides, not this. Besides, the fact that I'm an American pushing for GMT should dispel any of that notion. --Liquid^Talk 16:46, April 4, 2012 (UTC)

Also GMT isn't used anymore, it's UTC now... (UTC is teh time standard.)

GMT is generally used but really we are time zone UTC+0 (or UTC+1 March-October). As far as I am aware GMT is a deprecated name that is still in general use, probably because people don't like change.

Support - And call it UTC. Many Britons seem to think that their time zone is always GMT, not aware that there is a distinction between mean time and summer time. It is easier to convert from a uniform time zone such as UTC into local time, especially when half of the Northern Hemisphere has rolled into summer time and the other hasn't (Europe vs. North America). It also makes it easier on Australians than if the canonical time zone were, say, EDT (UTC-4) in their winter. Conversions for convenience and a timeanddate.com link should continue to be encouraged.
