Hi, admin team!

I wanted to swing by and let you know of a new feature we've recently released for interested sites. It's called the Parent Filter and can be accessed through adding /wiki/MediaWiki:ParentFilter to the end of the site's url.

The purpose is two-fold: 1) to provide information to parents about the site's subject from people who are actually very familiar with the content and 2) to eventually provide a home or hub for all such pages parents can visit.

Here's a great example of the feature put to use.

You can learn more about it here. Feel free to throw any questions or comments you might have into that blog.

Best regards,

Discussion

Comment - I'm not sure if we really need this since RuneScape has no explicit content and Jagex is probably a better authority on this subject anyway. --LiquidTalk 23:41, September 16, 2013 (UTC)

Actually there is quite a bit of content that could be seen as explicit: batwing robes for females, mermaids, the various uses of mild swear words such as damn, ass, etc Template:Signatures/Ciphrius Kane 00:43, September 17, 2013 (UTC)
I hate when my mom comes in when I'm looking up the stats for batwing and then she hits me for "looking at porn". MolMan 00:46, September 17, 2013 (UTC)
  • doesn't get why batwing is explicit* Also, I really don't think "damn" and "ass" are things to worry about (remember, ass isn't a swear word if you're talking about donkeys!). --LiquidTalk 22:38, September 23, 2013 (UTC)
"Kick some ass" Uh oh, here comes PETA MolMan 22:43, September 23, 2013 (UTC)

Nty - We don't really need this. All poorly made, polygonal breasts aside, there is, as helmet said, no explicit content. Also, we're not really a site that needs to worry about "parental consent" and joining it; people are finding us by googling a RuneScape term and seeing us as #1. After that, they're closing the tab and killing Graardor. Also, wouldn't it be easier to just say it is located at "MediaWiki:ParentFilter" instead of telling us to append "/wiki/MediaWiki:ParentFilter" to the url? I mean, if we'd want any real attention to the page, it'd be linked instead of found by typing in into the url... MolMan 00:56, September 17, 2013 (UTC)

Don't forget that a lot of staffers aren't wiki masters. User:TyA/sig 01:52, September 17, 2013 (UTC)
Except this particular member of staff is the one Wikia hired to write WoW Wiki after they forked to Wowpedia. Having said that, if he had linked it and we never created it, it would appear on WantedPages. User:Cqm/Signature

Comment - The parent filter isn't there for us to warn people about explicit content, it's there for us to describe the content of the game and who it's suitable for. Is it that much of a problem for us to participate in this? User:Cqm/Signature

It's meant to tell parents that RuneScape is not some sort of virtual brothel. I know the effort is minimal, but the entire thing comes off with this "utterly useless" vibe. Why bother? MolMan 18:10, September 17, 2013 (UTC)
Just because you, as a non-parent, think it's useless, doesn't mean it won't be useful to someone else. It's not like it's even something we need to actively maintain, it'll probably be fine once it's set up. I don't even know why setting it up would need any form of consensus, I was considering setting it up when I saw the blog about it on central. User:Cqm/Signature

Comment - Promote was about as useful as this, and we did that. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg244/blaze_fire12/RuneScape%20Wiki%20Images/Blaze_fire.pnghttp://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg244/blaze_fire12/RuneScape%20Wiki%20Images/12.png 18:20, September 17, 2013 (UTC)

Not even a filter - If anyone feels like it, they can write it up. As long as it doesn't disrupt us or our readers (like a real filter would). 222 talk 03:51, September 18, 2013 (UTC)

I agree with the brains man - Just let someone write one up if they want. User:TyA/sig 12:37, September 18, 2013 (UTC)

Support - Sure, there's no explicit content on RuneScape.  But how does a parent whose kid is asking if they can create an account know that?  The amount of research I have to do every time my kid asks to create an account for some online game is insane.  Something like this would be really helpful to a lot of parents.  I think we can all agree the community itself makes this an inappropriate game for a 10 year old.  What's wrong with summing it up for parents to give them an idea of whether or not their kid should be playing it?  I'd do it myself if I weren't so hopelessly inept. --Farming-icon Ms ZuZu Talk Quest icon fixed 04:57, September 19, 2013 (UTC)

Per Aaron and Ty - Let's just let somebody who wants to fill in the template and move on. This really doesn't affect anything.

  1. REDIRECT User:-Matt/sig 07:17, September 19, 2013 (UTC)

No Support - No one would use it anyway. I mean, if noone uses it, noone would update it. Even one of the Wikia Admins agree:
00:30 <Haidro> nah
00:30 <Jlun2> if you arent going to help the wiki, then nty
00:30 <Haidro> Who even checks the wiki for daily challenges

See? So why bother with it if noone will use it?--Jlun2 (talk) 01:18, September 20, 2013 (UTC)

I don't see how that quote references this. User:Cqm/Signature
For anyone wondering, this conversation was about me getting a decorated fishing urn challenge (start filling two urns). I realised that you only needed to start filling the urns and not just complete them. So jlun said try destroying one and start the next one. I tried but it reset to 0 ( I had gotten 1/2 after starting my first one), so then I had no other urn :s. Then he said bank one of the urns and try and I said no. Then he said something like "you aren't helping the wiki Haidro "... it's in the logs.
But yes this has nothing to do with the ParentFilter at all. Haidro (talk) 22:03, September 20, 2013 (UTC)
Besides, the Parent Filter isn't aimed at people who already play. It's aimed at parents whose kids either want to play or are already playing. Parents who know nothing at all about it. That's who this is meant to benefit. --Farming-icon Ms ZuZu Talk Quest icon fixed 01:03, September 21, 2013 (UTC)

Comment - Jagex's T&Cs forbid anyone under 13 from making an account (I'm assuming that the rule applies to RuneScape itself, it's not clear whether it's among the products covered by that rule). I'm going out on a limb here, but pretty much all 13-year-olds I've met are familiar with swears and sex, so this filter would be for the under-13s, who aren't supposed to be playing without an adult supervising them. Not opposing or supporting this since it apparently makes no difference, but wouldn't implementing things aimed at people who are breaking terms and conditions be sort of promoting rule breaking? Under-13s shouldn't be playing RuneScape at all, adding a filter solely for their sake strikes me as a little odd. User:Real Not Pure/Signature 20:32, September 20, 2013 (UTC)

False. You may make an account at younger than 13. If you admit to being 12 or under, you are limited to quickchat unless your parent OKs regular chat. MolMan 20:36, September 20, 2013 (UTC)
And when limited to quick chat for that reason then you can only see quick chat Template:Signatures/Ciphrius Kane 21:19, September 20, 2013 (UTC)

Suggestion - Let's stop pretending like this actually matters and just let someone who cares make it. It will be dead within a week just like the Promote stuff. MolMan 01:14, September 21, 2013 (UTC)

Just to end this - Here, I made it. Just copy and paste the template there onto the MediaWiki page. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg244/blaze_fire12/RuneScape%20Wiki%20Images/Blaze_fire.pnghttp://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg244/blaze_fire12/RuneScape%20Wiki%20Images/12.png 18:28, September 22, 2013 (UTC)

Slight tweak - "13+ (Children under 12 can play, though with limited chat settings) - User:Real Not Pure/Signature 18:40, September 22, 2013 (UTC)
I don't think that'd pass with everybody else, Mol. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg244/blaze_fire12/RuneScape%20Wiki%20Images/Blaze_fire.pnghttp://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg244/blaze_fire12/RuneScape%20Wiki%20Images/12.png 03:34, September 25, 2013 (UTC)

Added! http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg244/blaze_fire12/RuneScape%20Wiki%20Images/Blaze_fire.pnghttp://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg244/blaze_fire12/RuneScape%20Wiki%20Images/12.png 03:34, September 25, 2013 (UTC)

Notice of intent - Assuming no one has any complaints about it, it looks like we'll go with Blaze fire12's page. After which, we'll allow sysops to edit the page as necessary, as we currently allow with the Promote tool. I'll give this a day or so to get any last minute feedback on the layout/content of the page. User:TyA/sig 18:35, September 26, 2013 (UTC)

Sure, I guess there's no downside to this. --LiquidTalk 00:22, September 27, 2013 (UTC)

Comment - Why are we comparing RS to World of Warcraft? I've never played it, but, after some googling/wowwiki'ing (wowpedia rather), it seems very different and not very 13+ for that matter. 18px-Avatar.png Fswe1 26px-Brassica_Prime_symbol.svg.png 05:34, September 27, 2013 (UTC)

It's just a filter. It's just something for parents to understand the game. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg244/blaze_fire12/RuneScape%20Wiki%20Images/Blaze_fire.pnghttp://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg244/blaze_fire12/RuneScape%20Wiki%20Images/12.png 18:10, September 30, 2013 (UTC)
Looking at WoW, those parents are bound to get a fairly bad impression of the game (RS, that is). 18px-Avatar.png Fswe1 26px-Brassica_Prime_symbol.svg.png 19:44, September 30, 2013 (UTC)
Oh. I may have misunderstood your point. Right, then, in that case, what would you put in similar games? http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg244/blaze_fire12/RuneScape%20Wiki%20Images/Blaze_fire.pnghttp://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg244/blaze_fire12/RuneScape%20Wiki%20Images/12.png 19:46, September 30, 2013 (UTC)
League of Legends maybe? Not that I've played LoL or WoW. User:Cqm/Signature
It doesn't seem anything like LoL to me, but I haven't played much LoL. I think we should stick with WoW, as it is probably the closest comparison out there. User:TyA/sig 17:11, October 1, 2013 (UTC)
We could say Club Penguin. Same sort of membership system, similar frequency in updates (IIRC), has minigames, has something comparable to quests, you can customise your own house, go to various locations, chat, it has events. Problem is that it's a tiny game compared to RS and has no combat, which is quite a major and characteristic part of RS. Ugh, I dunno... 18px-Avatar.png Fswe1 26px-Brassica_Prime_symbol.svg.png 07:05, October 2, 2013 (UTC)
Without trying to start a Dota vs LoL thread, I think RS's art assets are more similar to Dota 2 - it's less cartoony than LoL. Examples of similar types of character: sterotypical warrior, female caster and this is about as terrifying as Dota people get. Gameplay-wise it's almost totally different though; in terms of mechanics the closest I can think of is WoW with the whole questing RPG thing. Club Penguin...the lack of combat detracts a bit from using it as an example. Parents could see it, think 'hey look it's really kid-friendly with colourful animals' and find something pretty different in RS. User:Real Not Pure/Signature 15:45, October 2, 2013 (UTC)

┌───────────────────────┘
So we use multiple examples when it comes to comparisons to illustrate it has elements of each. One game is going to be different to another game that's the idea of competition. I don't think we're going to find a direct, well-known comparison so just use multiple comparisons. User:Cqm/Signature

Out of interest, what's "Security Concerns" for? Is that for risk of losing your account, or is it supposed to be about malware and stuff? User:Real Not Pure/Signature 15:58, October 5, 2013 (UTC)
I think it's more related to security of personal information, such as chat with strangers on the internet. I'm sure we've all heard horror stories of cyber bullying leading to suicides even on the more well known sites such as twitter and facebook tht you'd expect to be a little safer given their profile. RuneScape allows complete anonymity, but you can still give out personal information if you choose (although asking for it is against RS rules). I think it's worth mentioning something along those lines. User:Cqm/Signature

Comment - Hi all, I'm actually working on this initiative for Wikia, and I've taken the page created by Blaze_fire12 and copied it onto the [[MediaWiki:ParentFilter|MediaWiki Parent Filter page]]. Thanks for putting that effort into it. I do agree with Ms. Zuzu that it's the parents whose kids are interested in a game the parents know nothing about who have to go online and do all the research, and it's so time-consuming and hard (I speak from personal experience here). If you as a community of experts wouldn't mind providing a simple overview of what the game experience is like, that would be really helpful and I would be happy to update the page myself with that content. (Here's an example from the Sims wiki of what I as a parent would find pretty helpful, specifically the "in-depth information" sections on violence, sexual themes, and comic mischief.) Thanks again for the lively discussion and for contributing to the project. Generaltsao @  (profile)•(talk)•(email) 19:04, October 4, 2013 (UTC)

I can see Community Attitude is blank, although I don't think the various ratings exists for RuneScape. Is there anything else that we should look to fill out? User:Cqm/Signature

Comment - "Security Concerns: None" isn't accurate. Security concerns are real-life effects about which parents worry, like what people can say to their children (solicitation, bullying, etc.), what children can say about themselves (name, address, age, phone number, parents' bank account number, etc.), and what children can do with their money (spend it without limit, etc.). Remember that "children" means minors, i.e., anyone under 18 years (varies with legal jurisdiction). It should probably say something like:

Security Concerns: The game inherently immerses players self-identified as over the age of 12 years in free-form, real-time chat via a variety of in-game mechanisms. The game publisher also provides web-based forums outside of the game where all players may post free-form text, which may be viewed by anyone, including non-players, with a web browser. Additionally, all players may purchase optional in-game elements using a credit card or similar payment method associated with the player's account. Although the game publisher prohibits using its game for illegal purposes as part of the terms of service, it can only provide special protection mechanisms for players who self-identify their age as 12 years or under.

Feel free to edit the wording for any inaccuracy or omission. --User:Saftzie/Signature 11:53, October 19, 2013 (UTC)

Obeying the code of conduct is all well and good, but chances are they have to be reported before Jagex notice what's happened. It still has all the danger/concerns of any internet forum/chatroom. User:Cqm/Signature

Closed - The page can now be found at [[MediaWiki:ParentPage]] after being moved by Wikia (see below). Saftzie's addition to security concerns has been added. Any further requests to edit the page can be made through RS:AR. User:Cqm/Signature

Hey guys! I know this discussion is closed, but I wanted to make sure you were officially notified by staff that Parent Pages have moved to Project:ParentPage, and all previously-associated MediaWiki pages have been deleted. We took the temperature of a number of communities, who expressed a desire for a move out of the MediaWiki namespace and into ns:4. This move was actually effected some time ago, but the detritus from it was never cleaned up. So I've dropped by today to make sure there is only one page, Project:ParentPage, that has to do with this project.
There are more changes coming soon with ParentPage, but they're not fully cooked yet. I'll be back in the coming weeks to keep you fully apprised. Thanks very much for being an alpha tester of the ParentPage project! — CzechOut 00:56, April 14, 2014 (UTC)
