Forums: Yew Grove > New theme

I, Iiii_I_I_I, am proposing:

  • a new theme for Oasis;
  • a slightly new main page;
  • a new logo.

All of these changes are on my test wiki here.

The new theme entails:

  • a new background, stolen from the wallpapers section of runescape.com
  • a new color scheme:
    • blue, because I like blue
    • white, because
      • literally every other color matches white
      • our current brown only goes with other browns; it also reminds me of poop
      • it's a contrast to the dark RuneScape website
      • it differentiates us from other RuneScape fansites, most of which are also dark; Tip.it, rsbandb, RuneZone, etc.

The new main page entails:

  • a "slider" of six images near the top of the page, which
    • link to six major content articles
    • is easier to comprehend, I think, than three columns of text
    • makes up for the lack of images in the left column of the main page after the removal of FA
  • the merging of "Events" and "Wiki News" into a "Community" section
  • the merging of "Updates", "Patch notes", and "On this day..." into a "RuneScape News" section
    • I would also like to cut the descriptive sentences after each update. It's already making our current Updates section huge, and is not what most users come to the RuneScape Wiki for.

The new logo entails:

  • a change from our current logo, which
    • uses the font from another game, Neverwinter Nights
    • is ugly
  • a switch to a more professional-looking font (Brandon Grotesque)
  • two possibilities; one as the logo in the top left, and one in the center of the page

Sincerely,

Iiii I I I 01:40, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

Edit: works on tablets too, although we can't design for Retina displays

Iiii_I_I_I Support - looks nice Elune (talk) fetus is a good boy 01:59, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

Strong support - The brown theme we have now is very ugly. The new one looks nice. It's pretty close to the default Oasis theme. --LiquidTalk 02:03, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

Oppose color scheme - The blue looks like default Wikia monaco. Also that background is entirely overused by RuneScape. It was even our Twitter background for a long time because I got it from Jagex's Twitter background. Also why are templates brown? Doesn't match with anything. I do like the homepage look, however. It's very neat and new-looking. User:Urbancowgurl777/Signature 02:41, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

The blue is more or less like default oasis too. I don't see why it's a bad thing. User:Cqm/Signature
Am I the only one who really likes monaco? :( Ancient talisman Oil4 Talk 08:43, July 21, 2014 (UTC)
The templates are not part of the proposal; only the three things I listed above are. Existing templates/diffs will just be recolored. --Iiii I I I 11:45, July 21, 2014 (UTC)
I think it's a bad thing precisely because it looks default, Cam. Regarding the templates: mkay good, then the only thing I have a problem with is the color scheme (or lackthereof). I like the logo because of how updated and clean it looks, but it might not fit with the spirit of the game. I wouldn't oppose it though, just the default blue and overused background image. Strong Support - It looks fantastic. I've been wanting a new theme for ages but I lack the creativity needed to make one myself. My only issue is with the wiki logo being centered on the page; this looks weird when the icons below it are centered on their column. Ancient talisman Oil4 Talk 08:40, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

How about now? --Iiii I I I 11:45, July 21, 2014 (UTC)
Perfect. Ancient talisman Oil4 Talk 13:10, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

Neutral - I agree that we need a new theme, but I'm not too fond of the logo or colour scheme of this one. Adventurer's log Wahisietel (Talk) Quest map icon 13:35, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

Can't do too much about the color scheme, but I've RuneScape'd the logo slightly. --Iiii I I I 20:06, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

Support - It all looks very clean and chic, and it's good to move on from brown plus brown mixed with brown. One critique I'd like to offer, and that's on the logo. It's v plain and doesn't really speak "RuneScape". Now maybe that's because I'm not a professional and some chap with a beret and moustache should be telling me that it's minimalistic not plain, but my first impression is that it's just normal text, not anything recognisable that people will remember. That is my only little gripe. Ronan Talk 14:07, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

It's minimalistic, not plain

I thought it was trajan pro originally which was used on the rs site and logo iirc, not sure if it still is. User:Cqm/Signature

Oppose - Many users (such as I) are used to the current theme with this nice brown tint. The blue one looks... OK. However, I'm not sure where Wikia's functionality ends, so is it possible for the user to choose the theme he views the wiki in? If so, support. Actually, would it be possible for the old theme to be recreated in one .css file? That would still keep it as an option, and would definitely gain my support. Bluefire2Talk edit my sigOil4 I made this 14:19, July 21, 2014 (UTC)
There's a considerable difficulty in maintaining css for a different theme due to the amount of css wikia regularly changes. The only viable method is to create a duplicate wiki with the old theme and import it from there.
I'm not sure how viable that is though because of how wikia caches it's css - $wgStylePath (which I think is the one that contains the most recent build number) isn't available in css, just js and php. You'd have to import it through js, giving you a flash of blue before getting brown again. User:Cqm/Signature
How does Wikipedia let users change their skin? Could we do something like that? --Iiii I I I 20:09, July 21, 2014 (UTC)
Skin or theme? Skin is just a setting in Special:Preferences, I don't know enough about wikipedia to know if they have separate themes you can alter through preferences. Maybe a gadget, but even that takes maintaining. User:Cqm/Signature
Cam, I'd be fine with the flash of blue. Having said that, I'll look into making some form of plugin that prevents the blue from downloading in the first place. A chrome extension should do the trick. Bluefire2Talk edit my sigOil4 I made this 20:48, July 21, 2014 (UTC)
If you can do it with GreaseMonkey or TamperMonkey it might avoid the flash and I think it's ok to insert a style tag before the DOM is ready. You just need to make sure it's inserted after the standard oasis scss file. User:Cqm/Signature
Ok, that sounds good. The only problem is that I suck at css :/ Bluefire2Talk edit my sigOil4 I made this 09:42, July 22, 2014 (UTC)

Neutral - The logo doesn't speak for itself imo. It's too plain. Also, the colors on the homepage looks empty lol. It's too bright. User:Jr Mime/Signature 14:24, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

>colors look empty
>too bright

Anyway, I've darkened the gradient for each section, if that's what you meant, and changed the logo slightly --Iiii I I I 20:06, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

Neutral - I'm glad everyone agrees we need to get rid of our current poop theme, and the organisation of this new one is very good, though I have some remarks when it comes to the design.

First of all, as others have said, the logo is too plain. I'd give it a fancier font (the pre-Mobilising Armies RS font if that's possible) and, I dunno, a rune instead of the dots on the i to make it more RuneScape'y.

The colours are okay, but I'd make the blue a bit darker. The links are pretty bad if you ask me.

The main page now has six content "tiles". I'd reckon another two could be added, really. Maybe Characters, Music, Graphical updates, Minigames or Future updates or something. Appealing stuff that people like, basically.

As for the wallpaper, I'm personally not a fan of it. Too commonly used and, well, meaningless, so to speak. I don't mind, really, so long as it's not this or any of the RS3 and citadel stuff... I'd be in favour of using in-game images, or a collage of them, fading into one another. Probably bright locations like, uh, the desert or Kandarin/Misthalin/Asgarnia. Just my two cents. 18px-Avatar.png Fswe1 26px-Brassica_Prime_symbol.svg.png 16:12, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

I've changed the logo slightly and darkened the links. --Iiii I I I 20:06, July 21, 2014 (UTC)
Links are good, still not a fan of the font. Everything's just so...generic. :/ 18px-Avatar.png Fswe1 26px-Brassica_Prime_symbol.svg.png 08:43, July 22, 2014 (UTC)

Support new theme - I support the need for a new theme, this current one we have at the moment is starting to look a little dull, however I will say that a much better colour scheme and logo is needed than the one shown in your example. Abyssal vine whip TonyBest100 Bandos chestplate 19:38, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

Strong support - The new theme is a lot easier on the eyes. I like the simplicity of the logo, though it does take away from the 'medieval fantasy' feeling. https://i.imgur.com/BGUyLfN.png https://i.imgur.com/CJaW7Er.png 20:17, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

I don't agree that bright blue is easier on the eyes than gentle brown, but this is all subjective anyway. I really don't see how this thread is going to get anywhere. Bluefire2Talk edit my sigOil4 I made this 20:48, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

Support - It looks really nice. RSN: Warthog Rhys Talk Completionist's cape... Coming soon. 20:29, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

Comment - Why are the modules in the 'sidebar' without a gradient background on the mainpage? Also, could we get a fixed background image rather than one that moves with the page - it looks better imo. I also converted the mainpage to use divs rather than tables a while back in an effort to try and improve SEO, would it be possible to have divs for this too? User:Cqm/Signature

The solid-colored right column was supposed to differentiate it slightly from the left column, but I guess it looks kinda weird. I'll make some changes tomorrow when I'm on my computer. The tables are just a placeholder thing so I can get the look right first, it's definitely not going to be the final product. --Iiii I I I 05:47, July 22, 2014 (UTC)
Also, the current favicon uses neverwinter. Do you have any plans to use the new font in the favicon, or use a different image all together? User:Cqm/Signature

Oppose - Very bland/boring. Not a fan of the background or color scheme. Suppa chuppa Talk 23:43, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

Support - I think it looks pretty nice. Can we see what it would look like on an article page? User:TyA/sig 04:46, July 22, 2014 (UTC)

The colors of the infobox and the stub template at the bottom of Nex are about what it'd be like. Ignore the different look of the infobox; that was one of my proposals (stolen from Wookieepedia) that actually passed but was never implemented because I was too lazy/too inexperienced with coding to actually transfer it over. --Iiii I I I 05:28, July 22, 2014 (UTC)

Neutral - I like the redesigned main page and the new logo, but I dislike the new colour scheme and the new background. Temujin 10:47, July 22, 2014 (UTC)

Note - I've added this thread to Template:Wiki News, so whoever closes this thread should update that. User:TyA/sig 16:32, July 22, 2014 (UTC)

Support - Looks good to me. -- Megadog14Talk 20:58, July 22, 2014 (UTC)

Comment - Monobook at the Eye Wiki seems not so great and much more like the RS Wiki current Oasis theme than even the proposed Oasis theme. I suspect the Eye Monobook theme is not intended for RS Monobook. Can you confirm? --User:Saftzie/Signature 21:41, July 22, 2014 (UTC)

Yeah, my theme is only for Oasis. Monobook will stay unchanged. --Iiii I I I 01:59, July 23, 2014 (UTC)
