Hi!

As some of you might have heard, the University of Lumbridge has been given a new owner, and a new look! Please post here if you agree or disagree with the decisions made, and/or with anything else that you'd like to discuss. Adam SavageTalk 23:24, August 6, 2011 (UTC)

Discussion

Comment - I think the heading leaves a bit of room for improvement, but the sections look much better than before, and have a definite RS theme, which the old sections lacked. It doesn't have much information in it right now though, such as how to add new classes, explain a bit about Electives, how to become a teacher and a list of the present ones, and although there are some links regarding a few of these topics, they all take you to pages that don't exist. And it might just be my general inexperience with the "University-like section", but I have no idea what a "Dame" in this context is, and if it's not just me then perhaps that should be explained a bit as well. All in all though, I think when it gets up and running it'll be an improvement. And by the way, who's the author? Sign please? Ronan Talk 12:49, August 6, 2011 (UTC)

I am planning on editing in all the new class pages, electives information, etc. I may also be breaking up select links from the Useful Links section into their own respective sections. Keep in mind that I was just put in charge of the University, so I haven't had a month to perfect everything. Adam SavageTalk 18:39, August 6, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - I don't get it... Why make a yew grove about it... --User:Cakemix/Sig 18:18, August 6, 2011 (UTC)

Close abolish and erase It was pointless, is pointless, and helps no one at all, unless you count swelling the egos of those involved. When people need help we have various places where that help can be sought, this did nothing and should be ended as the wiki post was ended. At least the post had a few good issues along the way.--Degenret01 18:53, August 6, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - What is the point of the "university of lumbridge" when we have a help wiki which tells how to edit the wiki and specific style guides and guide line pages for each kind of page (eg, item)? Hofmic Talk 19:11, August 6, 2011 (UTC)

For the record, you aren't in charge of it Adam, the wiki never granted that upon you.--Degenret01 19:20, August 6, 2011 (UTC)

Degenret's right, Adam. It's in the RS namespace, so becoming the "owner" of it would probably require a YG thread. ɳex undique 19:34, August 6, 2011 (UTC)

Can it - per Degen. I never saw a point to it and nothing has changed. Andrew talk 20:20, August 6, 2011 (UTC)

Close it - Whilst it seems good on paper, in practice I've not found it all that useful. Also, whilst I think that you're ambitious enough to get it up and running, I wouldn't want you to head it Template:Signatures/Ciphrius Kane 21:18, August 6, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - I've got to disagree with everyone here. The only reason that it had no point is due to the fact that when created, Stelercus didn't tend to it well. And, no one contributed, ergo it became dead, and thus is now thought of as trash by users who won't bother to do anything with it. I feel that, if changed and done right, it can be of help to the wiki. I also feel we should definitely keep it, as where is this other thing that teaches new users about coding? I haven't seen it. Also, I don't see a reason for the childish immediate negativity towards the jump-starting and towards me. You can't know whether or not I'm capable of heading anything unless you let me try, disregarding previous incidents. Moving on, you also can't know if this is a good idea for the Wiki if you just shut it down in its infancy. I understand that a few people here don't like me, but that isn't a reason to close down this project. Also, @Degeneret01:

First off, in response to the above, this isn't pointless, and it in no way swells any egos whatsoever. List one way that this can swell someone's ego and I'll believe you. Also, this can be incredibly helpful. It can be a much easier, more convenient way to teach users what everything on this Wiki is about. I had to learn everything on my own, and you saw what happened(Not that it's an excuse). I have also not seen any other places where new users can look for coding help. The only place I have seen is help with signature coding, and what good does that really do in the first place, anyway. You can't design signatures until you know how to do other things as well. Also, the Post is and was a fantastic idea, and was a lot of fun when those who headed it were still active. I understand that I might not be the absolute best person to head this, but I'm active, I know coding, I like working with people, and I'm more than willing to do it. Heck, I'll head the whole thing by myself. I'm even interested in the Post. All I ask is that you guys at least give me a chance to do something for the Wiki. Like I said, how do you know that I'm such a bad guy? Adam SavageTalk 22:03, August 6, 2011 (UTC)

I really don't know what you mean by heading the project. I don't think anyone has ever headed or owened any project before. ɳex undique 22:09, August 6, 2011 (UTC)
Stelercus headed/owned this, while (I've forgotten who) headed/owned the Post. If you'd like a better term, founded. Adam SavageTalk 22:11, August 6, 2011 (UTC)
"Also, the Post is and was a fantastic idea, and was a lot of fun when those who headed it were still active." I was also running the post when it died, and its death had nothing to do with my inactivity and everything to do with a lack of people interested in submitting content to it. (And don't try to bring it back. See Forum:The Wiki Post is Dead and Forum:Closing the RSWP.) User:Stelercus/Signature 01:42, August 8, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - While I think that the title, format, and layout of this whole thing, University of Lumbridge, is just weird, I believe that this wiki needs a page devoted to teaching new users how to make minor edits, new sections, new pages, signatures, templates, make a personal user page n what all they can put on them, revert edits, how Special:pages can help them with the fight against vandalism, and anything else I'm forgetting put all on one starter page and link out from there. I don't think the wiki needs teachers, whatever dames are (sounds sexist at the moment), and students. The teachers are anyone that already knows how to do all the stuff I mentioned above and can edit the pages that are informing the new users. The students are the new users. I don't see the point in naming any of them. The teachers will be seen in the history pages and I'm sure the students will not want to be labeled as students for more than a day or two after reading all the pages that you can provide. The one thing I do like is that Cook and Adam see that the users want help and are trying to do something about it.RSHelp (talk) 23:55, August 6, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - Having been a part of this from the beginning, and giving a vast amount of help to Steler, I understand a lot of it. I don't think this is the right way to help people. I think help namespace pages and the user help pages are the best ways to go. People can always ask for help in the chat if they need it. User:Haloolah123/Sig 01:39, August 7, 2011 (UTC)

Okay okay.... - So, where is the consensus you got before you "took over"?

  1. REDIRECT User:-Matt/sig 02:15, August 7, 2011 (UTC)
I never just "took over". Cook gave me permission to do things with it. Adam SavageTalk 03:03, August 7, 2011 (UTC)
Cook doesn't control the wiki. ɳex undique 03:40, August 7, 2011 (UTC)

Another Comment - All it is meant to do is teach the basics of wiki editing. However, this already exists: Help:Contents and http://help.wikia.com/wiki/Help:Contents. Isn't it redundant to waste time redoing what already exists? Hofmic Talk 02:57, August 7, 2011 (UTC)

Kill - Useless & redundant, as others have pointed out already. I've never even seen anyone save Stelercus who have commented/used it before. It doesn't need an overhaul, it just needs to be keeled. There's no saving it.

Kill - Useless and doomed to be unused even if it was "remade". Per all. 222 talk 03:58, August 7, 2011 (UTC)

Kill - Per all.

Nonono, that's not how it goes, we leave threads open for at least 7 days before closing them. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 20:31, August 7, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - I tend to use the UOL as an easier way to show some newer editors how to edit the wiki. The Help pages in the sharedwiki namespace doesn't explain as nicely as the UOL does, nor does it give a list of people who are known to have skills in the material. I suggest we don't delete it, but archive the lessons, and use them as a way to show people how to edit, and we can refer them to more specific Help pages on the lesson pages. User:TyA/sig 21:28, August 7, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - I just restored a pre-Adam revision of the page. If you want to screw around with it, Adam, please don't center it around yourself. I realize you're trying to help, but the only significant change to the page was an explanation of your revisions. Anyway, the UOL didn't work because nobody was interested in attending scheduled, in-game lessons (why didn't I realize that would never work?), so I reworked it into a system by which users can read the lessons and contact any of the teachers for support if they need it. Is anyone doing this? No idea, but deleting the pages entirely isn't going to do anyone any good. It couldn't ever hurt anyone by just sitting there (though feel free to prove me wrong, because you can't delete it otherwise), though it is conceivably possible that at one point or another, it will be helpful to someone, so just leave it alone. User:Stelercus/Signature 23:36, August 7, 2011 (UTC)

Closed - The one-week rule can generally be ignored in cases of proposer request. Adam has done so with his "Alright - Alright, you've all gotten your way. Kill it." message above. Given the course of the discussion, the University of Lumbridge will be closed, but the pages will be retained. --LiquidTalk 14:41, August 11, 2011 (UTC)
