its next to an item name such as:

LampLamp

(just an example)

the primal equipment was basicly what i was doing with Bonus XP items  —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ganimal (talk).

Discussion

Comment For those that are confused, what Ganimal is saying is should we have pages like this or ones like this? Small recharge gem AnselaJonla Slayer-icon 21:34, April 22, 2012 (UTC)

Support - On certain pages this could be very helpful, and it's visually attractive in my opinion. As long as we don't go adding random pictures beside words, I think we're good. While doing this excessively in the middle of a paragraph could be visually awkward, it's very beneficial to lists.User:Mazanaka/signature 21:43, April 22, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - I believe it was never against any policy. I added inventory icons Primal equipment long ago. (July 7, 2010) --Recent uploads SpineTalkGuest book 21:45, April 22, 2012 (UTC)

Support - I believe that the adding of item pictures next to the names of items on certain pages will make it more clear as to what items are being referred to. Doing this will help reduce potential confusion and will be a convenience to those who don't know what the items look like. Pillar Exi-Gents TalkPillar 22:18, April 22, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - to a lot of people it provides guidance --Ganimal 22:58, April 22, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - There's nothing saying that you can't you do this, and in-fact we [[Template:Item icon|already have a template that does this]]. If it makes the page look better, then be bold, and see where it takes you.

Oppose - I think inventory images work well in tables, but in the middle of a paragraph, there's several flaws. Firstly, In the middle of a paragraph, seeing the inventory image next to an item name (such as Lamp) causes the height of the line to be expanded. When lots of Lamp items Bronze sword are Iron helm mentioned, Overload (1) reading Lobster becomes quite difficult, Cabbage due to the constant interruption from the text. I also fail to see how the images really help, as Jagex often has obscure and reused inventory icons. The text can better represent the item (anyone recognize this: Blood-stained glass?). Even for common items, I don't see how the image adds anything to the article, as if anyone actually cares about its inventory icon, they can see if on its page (we'll assume the text instance of the item links to that page, anyway).

In lists, I'd say I'm more neutral to their usage, but would say a table would be the better choice for having icons with the text. I'm personally inclined to say that aesthetically, the lists are more practical and look better without the icons, though that's a matter of opinion. I'm still rather uncertain what "guidance" these images are adding, though. Hofmic Talk 03:02, April 23, 2012 (UTC)

Yes, I did recognize that, because it took me a long time to do the stupid semi-trans of the detailed image. ;3= User:Urbancowgurl777/Signature 03:19, April 23, 2012 (UTC)
Reading this more carefully, I found that the images are too distracting and somewhat disorienting. In addition, it looks very bad if some of the items in a list have images while others don't. Thus, I've decided that I oppose their usage in lists too. Images work well in tables, but not in the lists. Hofmic Talk 22:12, April 27, 2012 (UTC)
Isn't the point of those types of lists to help you find what you're looking for? So instead of the images distracting you trying to find what you're looking for, wouldn't they help tremendously?

Comment - Forum:Using Skill clickpics is relevant here too. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 08:40, April 23, 2012 (UTC)

Oppose all formats - This would just look plain ugly. It only suits Navbox templates, which is what we currently do. Haidro (talk) 12:12, April 23, 2012 (UTC)

Oppose - it looks ugly, especially since the images aren't the same size as the text. And as for helping, if someone doesn't recognise the name of the item, then an inventory image probably isn't going to be of much use either. Small recharge gem AnselaJonla Slayer-icon 13:02, April 23, 2012 (UTC)

Oppose - Difficult to maintain, difficult to read. Nty. Ronan Talk 13:09, April 23, 2012 (UTC)

Neutral - It looks fine on Primal equipment in that format, so unless it looks particularly ugly in another format I see no reason to oppose. Use common sense when applying the 'ugly scale' though.

Strong oppose - There was a proposal like this for adding skill icons, for example, "Construction-icon Construction is a member's skill that..." I'll find it later when I have time. Anyways, the point is that excessive icons in-line with text makes it very annoying to read. I don't mind icons in lists, for example:

  • Construction-icon Construction
  • Farming-icon Farming
  • Runecrafting-icon Runecrafting

But, having them in the same line as text is a plain no. I used skill icons here, but the point applies for items as well. --LiquidTalk 17:31, April 23, 2012 (UTC)

OK on lists - When viewing a list you want to be able to easily recognise each entry and quickly find what you may be looking for. Icons in the list helps to do this. Pretty sure other situations are covered adequately. --Henneyj 17:59, April 23, 2012 (UTC)

Oppose - Disrupts the flow of text, causes unnecessary increased line spacing, everyone has said it all. 222 talk 07:24, April 24, 2012 (UTC)

OK on lists - As per Henneyj. Blazefire12 07:27, April 24, 2012 (UTC)

Limited support - Sometimes, some nice colourful (inventory) icons can enhance the reading. But limit it to: tables, navboxes and lists. It would look really bad in regular texts, for I do not wish to know that examples of Fishing-icon fish I can use to eat during a fight with Gravecreeper icon a gravecreeper include Bouldabass bouldabass, Salve eel salve eel, Cave moray cave moray and Heim crab heim crab and that I may bring a Ring of kinship File:Ring of kinship (magic).png File:Ring of kinship (ranged).png File:Ring of kinship (melee).png ring of kingship and an Orb of oculus ooo into a Dungeon map icon Dungeoneering-icon dungeon, which features Knife (Dungeoneering) knives,... You get the point. 18px-Avatar.png Fswe1 26px-Brassica_Prime_symbol.svg.png 16:32, April 25, 2012 (UTC)

I don't think anyone was proposing that .. Ronan Talk 18:44, April 25, 2012 (UTC)
Actually, the proposal is so poorly written that the only thing I can be 100% certain of is that the nominator wants images next to text. Thus, I do think it's important to note being against using them in prose. Hofmic Talk 23:27, April 25, 2012 (UTC)
Yes, the proposal was vague at its least. 18px-Avatar.png Fswe1 26px-Brassica_Prime_symbol.svg.png 13:51, April 26, 2012 (UTC)

Oppose - This is readable and, therefore, informative. This is not. --User:Saftzie/Signature 06:42, April 27, 2012 (UTC)

How isn't it?
  1. REDIRECT User:-Matt/sig 04:21, May 2, 2012 (UTC)
Ah, I see. Well, if you want a semantics argument, I suggest you first define the word "is." In the meantime, not readable means not readable. --User:Saftzie/Signature 06:18, May 2, 2012 (UTC)
I meant, how does the addition of the images make it harder to interpret the content?
  1. REDIRECT User:-Matt/sig 06:22, May 2, 2012 (UTC)
The variable size breaks the fixed alignment of lists. When the pictures get in the way of reading the words to the point where you have to ignore the pictures, why have pictures? --User:Saftzie/Signature 05:50, May 12, 2012 (UTC)

Oppose - Images even that small still are still too tall and break the normal text formatting by causing the height of the line to be expanded. Combined with the fact the images are disorientating enough in their own right, this simply makes it harder to follow paragraphs properly. Smuff [kthnxbai] 22:04, April 27, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - Just to clarify, I don't think images in the middle of paragraphs and stuff like that is a good idea.

  1. REDIRECT User:-Matt/sig 04:21, May 2, 2012 (UTC)

Neutral - i see no reason to oppose the change. espeshily since most people using the wiki don't know what the items icon could be. people recognize icons more than a name for looking in a bank. so it would help in lists and limited uses elsewhere. perhaps implement a template for in use or something so it will be a set distance, but not distort the icon? that would solve the listings to be different. most icons are all the same size, only a few such as Blood'n'tar snelm (pointed) vs Blood'n'tar snelm (round) have a drastic size diffrence.  Magic  Hailfire Talk HS Farming 07:10, May 2, 2012 (UTC)

Ok for lists - but only if the icons are the same size. Otherwise the list ends up looking messy Template:Signatures/Ciphrius Kane 23:08, May 3, 2012 (UTC)

One thing I've noticed is that most image makers on the wiki crop item inventory images to their smallest non-transparent size. Perhaps it would be best to crop them to 32 by 32 to avoid this problem? Chrissyofhailfire's comment above has a nice example.  a proofreader ▸  23:20, May 3, 2012 (UTC)

Conditional support - In lists and tables only, per Fswe1. Imo, it would be worth it to first add images next to the names of items that were affected by the huge armour update, to help veterans find their way around their banks. Some lists and tables already have images due to ambiguity, such as those in Capes and List of books; it would be worth extending that to some other lists and tables.
