Positioning of template

Details

  • This is not "Image of the Month", but "Featured image".
    • If you noticed, I also changed "Article of the Month" to "Featured article". Sounds better together.
  • The template works by displaying random images from a list.
  • Only existing detail images with an "examine" text should be allowed.
  • The template has been protected so only admins are allowed to add to the list.
  • Additions to the list can be requested in the template talk page.
  • I think this is Chiafriend's original idea, and I would like to credit this to Chia.

Discussion

Suggestion - Should the featured image not focus more on the image and less about who the image is of? I mean, with the graphics update Runescape has some truly beautiful scenery and architecture. A thumbnail of a high resolution picture could just as easily and cleanly be inserted into the same template. Sorry if I am rambling about an issue already discussed in a different post. Cap and gogglesTEbuddy 06:18, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Support - Very neutral new setup, and images are as key as any other contributions. Let's honor that. 19:21, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Support - I think having an image on the main page is a great idea. I think that it's very important the the image(s) is chosen mainly based on its visual appeal. This should be a way for us to feautre the best looking images in the wiki. I don't think images without examine text should be ruled out. All we need to do is have a relevant caption. I have a question, do we want to randomize the image each time the page is loaded, or do we want to vote on it each month as a community? I am neutral about this decision, however, either way I think we should change the wording to featured article/image and user for that matter. That wording sounds more professional. Comment - Would this include personal images?  Tien  22:09, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Response - No. Personal images are in fact illegal. Good question though, you may not have known. :D

Support - great idea, why not? :) -Black helm (h1)jigenbakadoTalkBlack helm (h1) 23:46, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Support - Awesome idea. I think it would be great featuring cool images to the rest of the community. --Rollback crown Spencer (Talk | Edits | Contribs) 01:36, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Comment - Maybe we could vote on which image makes the list, but randomising images on each page load will be a better option. Personally, I would like to only include images of NPCs and items. Including any other image will be too subjective.   az talk   01:45, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Reply Randomizing images on load would be best, but whats the point of having images of items and npcs? If someone wanted details about items with examine text they would go to the article about that item. For a long time a stereotype has existed that Runescape is a browser game with terrible graphics. The graphics update totally changed that, and there is some brilliant scenery to be showcased. There are many users who could take high resolution images with full graphics in members worlds, myself being one of them. I would be happy to retrieve as many images as we would need to create a decent selection for voting on. We could create two categories, one for high resolution images, and one for images we have voted on for being featured and could go into the cycle. Cap and gogglesTEbuddy 03:19, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Comment - We should only use existing images. Uploading new images just for this template (and the main page) was not part of the idea.   az talk   04:23, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

So lets change the idea? I have been part of the last couple of iotm or features image threads and nothing was ever concrete. I wouldnt say because you posted it in your own thread that it is finalized and ready for approval. And this leads me back to my original question which is why feature chat heads and items and featured images when we could have full resolution areas that many players have never seen or ever will see? Cap and gogglesTEbuddy 04:40, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Reasons why scenery images should not be included in the template

  • Load time - Each HD image would take up too much load time. Shrinking them in size (in kb) is not an option, since we would like it to be in high definition.
  • Image size - Scenery and area image would require a larger space in the Main page. We do not have that much space to squeeze in these types of images. Shriking them in size (in pixels) would do no justice to the image itself, as it will appear small and insignificant.
  • "Orphaned images" - Since we are only going to use them in the Main page, the newly uploaded images will remain orphan unless it is being randomly displayed in Main page. Displaying all these images in another page just to avoid "orphaned images" is a waste of resources.

These are some of the problems associated with the idea. I know it's not much, but it's problematic nevertheless. I support the idea of having scenery images, but it would be best to have it in a specific article, rather than the Main page. Why don't you create an article with these type of high resolution images? "Sceneries in RuneScape" is a good name for an article. Start on something new.. =)   az talk   07:39, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

While I have not yet thought of a solution for the oprhaned images problem, take a look at what I have done with the template you provided. The image itself is 800kb, much smaller than many of our other images and animations and is high resolution.

it changes every time i go onto the main page? Joe Click Here for Awesomeness14:31, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

Yes, it randomised.   az talk   10:20, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Support - We already have an article of the month/featured article, why not a picture? It would be nice to let the pictures know they are just as important. Either it is a quest picture, a treasure trails coordinate, or maybe even something as simple as ashes.  ;) Santa hat Powers38 おはようヾ(´・ω・`) 11:39, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Comment - I like how the new spot on the page looks for a featured image. But the way I see it is that we have too many small indiscriminate images of chat heads and items and things with examine text, and zero with any real graphical detail emphasizing Runescape detailed atmosphere. I mean just take a look at the main page, within a 900x300 rectangle there is 6 different small icons that don't need to be there including two chat heads. Using eye candy as the featured image is very possible and would not have any real detrimental side effects except maybe a couple of orphaned images (12 at the max, one for each month) assuming we don't find a way to put uploaded images to use in other area around the wiki. Cap and gogglesTEbuddy 19:47, 15 March 2009 (UTC) Comment - How are we to determine which image is used. The image right now as had no consensus. 21:05, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Comment - Unfortunately it seems that AZ has crafted the featured image guidelines without consensus and strictly to exclude high definition images despite the fact he has yet to answer my post. Cap and gogglesTEbuddy 20:59, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
Comment - So it looks like the featured image has already been added to the main page and voting on what images to include is underway.

Vote for images here!

After a brief search through some random images I came upon the fishing guild image already used in the wiki which I nominated. Since the image is rather large, I posted a thumbnail of it, which I believe resolves the issue of load time and image size. Then users who are interested can just click on it and see what HD has to offer. This was just an example of what we could do with an HD image. I'm sure there are several good HD pictures available throughout the wiki. So please feel free to nominate more.

Closed - The project page has been moved to RS:FIMG. Please discuss the nominating procedures and guidelines there. The initial test images has been removed, and the nominated images has been added to the list.   az talk   10:20, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
