I think featured Images cannot have a transparency. These look plain bad. Featured Images should be like Featured Articles - Quality images that Reflect Runescape. And Runescape doesn't have a white background.
Basically, My suggestion is to add these rules for Featured Image candidates:
- No Tranparencies
- Screen-shot format
- HD
