I noticed that all the Dev. blogs are categorized under a nonexistent "Developers' Blog" namespace. I propose that they all be moved to the update namespace under a Developers' blog subpage. An example of this would be Update:Developers' Blog/Name.

What's the difference? Both of them can be searched just as easily using either Special:AllPages or Special:PrefixIndex: [1] (PrefixIndex) Hello71 01:30, December 19, 2009 (UTC)

The difference is that they are set apart from mainspace articles as to prevent clutter. We do the same thing with Exchange and Update articles, and the concept of Dev. Blogs falls under the same concept of the other Update articles. It should fit in the namespace, just the same. User:Stelercus/Signature 01:41, December 19, 2009 (UTC)

Support - I've been thinking the same thing. Also, I will probably make a discussion about this later, but updates are called News now. User:C Teng/sig 04:36, December 19, 2009 (UTC)

Forum:Update: namespace. User:C Teng/sig 13:37, December 19, 2009 (UTC)

Support - I agree in principle that the content related to the developers' blogs ought to be in a separate namespace from regular articles, and that there is little reason to keep that separate from the regular update "articles" that are also on this wiki. Apart from copyright issues (which I do find the developer blogs and update articles to be a blatant copyright violation contrary to fair use), if we are going to have this content on this wiki, this is a excellent method to deal with content of this nature. I suppose from a certain point of view these could be called "press releases", and thought of in that context. --Robert Horning 12:56, December 19, 2009 (UTC)

Support - Great idea. Let's just not get too addicted to mainspaces now! Quest point capeTalk Newbie856 edit count Nomad guideMusic icon 14:23, December 19, 2009 (UTC)

A slightly different naming convention

Comment - AzBot could perform the page moves and link fixes if required. I would suggest a different naming convention, though. Storing them in subpages is not a good idea.

As an alternative, the blogs could be named:

[Namespace]:Blog - [Project]: [Name of blog].

Namespace would be depend on the outcome of Forum:Update: namespace.

So the blog Animation Update: Particles would be called Namespace:Blog - Animation Update: Particles and each blog would be stored separately, unlike the current system of storing blogs in a single page. And if it is part of the same project, they can be linked to each other via a navbox (i.e. Template:DevBlog New Dwarf Quest).

How does this sound?   az talk   05:47, December 21, 2009 (UTC)

Support - Sounds good. I think it sounds better than having them as subpages, because the / would look pretty ugly in the title. I like it. Ancient talisman Oil4 Talk 10:43, December 21, 2009 (UTC)

Pending/Neutral - It sounds good, for the most part, other than that it seams that this would make it harder to find the pages when one is searching for them. I personally don't see what's wrong with storing them in sub pages, but I can be debated on all of this and probably will swing to support. User:Stelercus/Signature 13:18, December 21, 2009 (UTC)

There are plenty of issues regarding the use of subpages, and they have been debated quite thoroughly in Wikipedia. I do not wish to go into details, but below are some useful links to discussion of both the pros and cons of using sub-pages:   az talk   05:01, December 23, 2009 (UTC)
Point taken. However, I don't think we should put the name of the project in front of the name of the blog. Part of the goal here is to make things easier to find for those looking while not cluttering up the mainspace, and putting the project name in front adds another layer of complexity. Perhaps we can put the project name in brackets at the end of the title name. User:Stelercus/Signature 13:55, December 26, 2009 (UTC)
Or just make a redirect at 'Namespace:Blog - name of blog'. Ancient talisman Oil4 Talk 21:54, December 26, 2009 (UTC)

Comment @Stelercus: Actually, that is how Jagex the blogs are called. For example, in the header the Particles blog, it is:

Location: Home > Developer Blogs > Animation Update: Particles

IMO, it would be easier to group blogs belonging in a group, especially in the Developers' Blogs category, and in Special:Allpages. As Oli said, we could make the [Namespace]:Blog - [Name of blog] a redirect, and create a disambiguation page at [Namespace]:Blog - [Project].   az talk   08:59, December 29, 2009 (UTC)

Are they the title used on the front page? I am sure that there is a way to make searches for both naming conventions work. User:Stelercus/Signature 10:37, December 29, 2009 (UTC)
Umm, no. But the title is the closest thing to an "official" title, as it appears 3 times in the blog (in the HTML meta title, in the breadcrumb, and in the section header plague). The front page uses a shortened version of the blog title, and in the RS forums the J-Mods use a variation of the blog title (i.e. Blog: Snow Particles for Animation Update: Particles, Blog:Elite Achievement Diaries for Achievement Diary: Elite Tasks, Dev Blog : Fairy Tale part 3. for Fairy Tale III: Subtitle Yet to Be Approved. Jagex is not known to for their standardised naming conventions... they always seem to mix up their names Lol   az talk   14:32, December 29, 2009 (UTC)

Comment - I like using subpages better. But I support moving Development Diaries to the Update: namespace. User:C Teng/sig 12:43, December 31, 2009 (UTC)

Comment - If we create a subpage (or Az's proposal) for this with "Blog" in it, then we should probably create one for diaries, because they were not turned into blogs. The Development Diaries page still exists on the RuneScape site. User:C Teng/sig 13:12, December 31, 2009 (UTC) Never mind, we don't have pages for the Diaries. User:C Teng/sig 13:15, December 31, 2009 (UTC)

Support - Per Oli Swiz Talk Review Me 13:21, January 3, 2010 (UTC)

Request closure - All blogs have been moved to the Update namespace. (I haven't created the redirects that Oli suggested. Is this necessary?) The cross-namespace links should be fixed (i.e. changing "Developers' Blog: " to "Update:Blog - "), but this was not part of this proposal, and thus can be done later.   az talk   15:56, January 21, 2010 (UTC)

I think the redirects might help find the blogs when one doesn't know what the project's name is. Ancient talisman Oil4 Talk 16:35, January 21, 2010 (UTC)
Yes check Done. The redirects have been created at [Namespace]:Blog - [Name of blog].   az talk   04:56, January 22, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Should we be doing the same with Development Diaries, too? User:C Teng/sig 15:14, January 25, 2010 (UTC)

Yes check Done. We only have one Development Diary locally. Must have missed it when I originally moved the blogs.   az talk   21:17, January 25, 2010 (UTC)

Closed - The Dev blogs and diaries have been moved to the Update: namespace. This thread has served its purpose. Cheers, Chicken7 >talk 00:38, January 26, 2010 (UTC)
