Deleting Quest & Skill Req Parameters
on this wiki
Forum page
Since Template:Infobox non-player character was created, there has been a parameter where the skill and quest requirements to meet the NPC goes. But not only are those parameters hardly used, they're not even necessary a majority of the time. I recently counted up the times that they had something useful (not counting all the Nos). About 1,119 NPCs had something in their quest parameters and 226 NPCs had something in their skill parameters, some of them even just stated Yes. Out of 3,147 NPCs on the wiki, that's a very small percentage.
The parameters are also hardly necessary. Most NPCs don't have any requirements to meet them, and if they do, they are usually spoken of somewhere in the lead paragraph. The requirements are not so necessary that they belong in an infobox. They're unused, unnecessary, and I think we should just remove them.

Sure. They take up a good amount of space too. --Andorin (Talk) (Contribs) 01:46, August 22, 2012 (UTC)
Half support - I'm a little at odds on the skill requirement (idk why) but whatever quest requirement there is for an NPC is covered by the Quest NPC parameter. MolManDltng Qst & Skll Rq Prmtrs 01:49, August 22, 2012 (UTC)
- Actually, I spent a short time reviewing the use of the other parameter and it's just as crap. MolManDltng Qst & Skll Rq Prmtrs 02:02, August 22, 2012 (UTC)
Comment - What about hiding those if it says "No"? bad_fetustalk 02:51, August 22, 2012 (UTC)
- I think that would only work for the skill requirement and considered that as well, but it's just so useless as Nex has said; the |questrequired is just total crap and redundant. MolManDltng Qst & Skll Rq Prmtrs 02:54, August 22, 2012 (UTC)
Go ahead - Doesn't seem like it's useful to me. --King LiquidheliumTalk 03:57, August 22, 2012 (UTC)
Strong support - I was seriously planning to make this same thread today.

Support - works the same with all other parameters that aren't used much. JOEYTJE50TALK 10:28, August 22, 2012 (UTC)
Support - Per all. Didn't actually realise it was that useless until now. Haidro (talk) 13:14, August 22, 2012 (UTC)
Support - Please, oh please. It'll clean up so much.

Support - Per what's been said above. Also, a Question - Will someone(s) need to go through with AWB and delete this parameter, or will MediaWiki just ignore it? Michagogo (talk) 21:32, August 23, 2012 (UTC)
- Ignored, but cook can go through and delete the unneeded. MolManDltng Qst & Skll Rq Prmtrs 21:34, August 23, 2012 (UTC)
- Most of them can be AWBed, the rest won't take too long.
Nex 23:01, August 23, 2012 (UTC)
- I think his concern was: would having these parameters, that don't exist in the template, present on a page ruin the layout? The answer is no, but either way an AWB or some other fast method will still end up removing the uselessness. MolManDltng Qst & Skll Rq Prmtrs 20:33, August 24, 2012 (UTC)
- Remove 'em from all pages first, then from the infobox template.

- Why would you even want to do it that way? Just remove it from the infobox template, the rest isn't even important. bad_fetustalk 16:27, August 25, 2012 (UTC)
- Okay, but the parameters need to be removed from the pages as well, otherwise people will just keep adding them to new articles. This shouldn't take any time at all if using, as mentioned, an AWB or enslaving Cook (again).

- Yeah -- as long as it won't break all the pages, it'd be just a matter of running it through AWB. Once this closes, I'll set Michabotbot on it if nobody else does. OTOH, if this closes during October, CMP would probably prefer to do it. Michagogo (talk) 22:13, August 25, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - What about the music tracks? They also have this parameter. Haidro (talk) 09:41, August 26, 2012 (UTC)
- They actually have some use there (|skillrequired could be disputed) but definitely keep |questrequired; we'd sound absolutely stupid to ask Does this music track play a role in any quest? - It's better to ask if a quest is required to unlock the track. --- Or is your question Will these accidentally be deleted in the process of removal? - No bot fails that badly. Support - Too rare to be necessary. When there is a significant level requirement, it can be mentioned in the lead paragraph, like Nex said.

Closed - obvious consensus to remove the parameters from the infobox.
