Chat bans
on this wiki
Forum page
Last May, Wikia renovated their chats giving us banned logs, allowing to kick users and ban them, adding times to bans on-chat, also the removal of the bannedfromchat right. Since the addition, once a user is banned, it is seen in the logs, found in a notice box on the user's contributions page, and is also in the masthead in a box. In the past couple weeks though, some banning moderators won't document these bans onto the chat bans page (Some won't even leave a message on the talk page). I don't know why this would be, since on Forum:Request for ChatMod, Fergie states that chat mods are "expected to keep the running list of current Chat bans updated" in an addition to the proposal. Even though they're logged on the special page, this shouldn't stop the chat mods from logging them here too. This was brought up on the Chat ban talk page soon after the chat ban logs were added, yet no one participated in this discussion. I personally would like to continue documenting them on the chat ban page, just for reference for the banned user. So, I'd rather know what we'd do, whether it being a dpl list on the chat bans page, a javascript script that automatically creates the wikitable, or just keep the chat ban archive and ban users and leave it?
For those wondering what some instances were when the bans weren't documented, can be found here:
- TyA banned Aakers1 for 3 days. No ban was documented on the chat ban page and no message was left on the talk page.
- AnselaJonla banned Doom Weaver for 1 week. No ban was documented on the chat ban page and a message was left on the talk page some what relevant to the ban, but not by AnselaJonla but by Cire04.
- Flaysian banned Vedant Chaturvedi for 3 hours. No ban was documented on the chat ban page and no message was left on the talk page.

Edit
Comment - With the logs being automatic now I really don't see the point in having a second list of almost the same thing. I'd say a message should still be left of some description on the user's talkpage, but really the ban log page can be deleted, or archived and discontinued.

Comment - I think we should just archive the old bans page and use the logs. They are in real-time and are always accurate. There's no need to have a second redundant page of manually updated logs. After all, we don't have a page full of IP bans. The old archived bans should be kept for reference. 222 talk 11:59, June 12, 2012 (UTC)
Comment - RS:C/B should be discontinued and the bans up to this point preserved in RS:CBA. These logs are more efficient and reliable. Ronan Talk 12:06, June 12, 2012 (UTC)
There is no reason to continue to document bans on that page, the log is more than enough imo. ajr 15:52, June 15, 2012 (UTC)
Kill the Chat bans page - The log automatically updates. Furthermore, I believe that you can give a logged reason now when banning someone, which eliminates the need for the reason to be stated on a third page, as the kickban reason was always "Kickbanned by (name)." --King LiquidheliumTalk 00:36, June 18, 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, you can give a reason for the bans when banning a user, see this. Hair 13:22, June 18, 2012 (UTC)
Archive the chat ban logs - and revamp the rest of the page to include information regarding bans, appeals, etc. Cåm 00:53, June 19, 2012 (UTC)
- Template:BFC should still be used. We still tell people they've been blocked, the same should go for chat bans. Cåm 01:01, June 19, 2012 (UTC)
- Not true. Most of the time we don't tell people that they've been blocked.

- Is there any particular reason for not telling them. Granted don't tell those who have been perm blocked, but for other transgressions why not? Cåm 21:24,6/19/2012
- Not true. Most of the time we don't tell people that they've been blocked.
Closed - The chat bans page will be deleted (there's nothing on there to archive). The information page will be updated to reflect our use of the automatic logs. RS:CHAT will have the Banning Guidelines section updated for appeals and etc. Regarding leaving users a message after banning, the same still applies as was discussed in the last thread (mentioned above). We can't force chat mods to leave them messages, it's not much different from warning wiki vandals or telling them they're blocked. However, I won't remove the request for messaging from the chat pages.
