With the last to forums about mainpage redesign being unsuccessful and, may I quote, inferior to, the current mainpage, I am deciding to just make a forum about implementing the runes - the part of my redesign most people actually liked. So, go Calculator:MainTest to see the new look. Note that I will be able to finish adding runes at around 4:00pm EST (-5 GMT) today, because I've got school. Discussion

Support - As creator. Adam SavageSpeech cursor 13:18, February 15, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - Consensus could still of been reached in another thread to add runes, you know. Hair 13:24, February 15, 2012 (UTC)

Neutral - I don't mind either way since it isn't a such a major change. Hair 13:32, February 15, 2012 (UTC)

Support - Did you really need a third thread, though? Hofmic Talk 14:12, February 15, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - Did you really need to make a thread for just adding two rune images to the main page...?  —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Battleben (talk) on 15:54, February 15, 2012.

He didn't have enough time to add it it all, I assume it would be in all the boxes. Hair 21:57, February 15, 2012 (UTC)

Support - Ossum Noobcaek ROBBENhulkOil4 I made this 15:58, February 15, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - Why only add 2 runes? Why not add them to the rest of the boxes? Matt (t) 07:21, February 16, 2012 (UTC)

Read - If you read, it says he doesn't have time to add all the runes yet. 222 talk 07:25, February 16, 2012 (UTC)

Oh, my bad. I made a mistake with the time conversion in my mind. Smile Matt (t) 07:27, February 16, 2012 (UTC)

Just do it - You already got your consensus in thread #2 to add them, and the changes are now so minor there is no necessity for a third discussion. Ronan Talk 10:35, February 16, 2012 (UTC)

Split

Created a different version at [ Calculator:MainTest/2]. I've always disliked the randomly-colored boxes and never understood the reasoning behind it. Tried to go for more subtle/muted colors, similar to wookieepedia's. I'd already implemented this but I guess it was a bit too bold, since Cook requested I start a discussion here. --Iiii I I I 04:06, February 20, 2012 (UTC)

Support New Colours and design - Yes. Hair 04:08, February 20, 2012 (UTC)

Strong support - The random-y colours don't represent anything, while the browns match the background and overall medieval theme of RuneScape. Hofmic Talk 04:28, February 20, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - I like it, except for the way it draws attention to the ads. When the main page is mostly bland, colorful and animated advertisements catch the eye. (More noticeable on here). Also, with the Developer's Blogs gone from Updates, the right side of the main page hangs down much farther than the left side. How can we fix that? ʞooɔ 04:56, February 20, 2012 (UTC)

Neutral - I actually really like both. Both are aesthetically pleasing. Raglough 11:39, February 20, 2012 (UTC)

General support - I like the updated design, but I find the colours (or perhaps just colour) a bit too bland. If we can change it to something darker, bolder and more contrasting, I'd be happy to see it implemented. Ronan Talk 16:51, February 20, 2012 (UTC)

Slight support - Apart from the colour scheme it looks good. I just find the current scheme to be a bit bland. Maybe change it to what Flay's saying Ring of kinship Ciphrius Kane Dungeoneering cape (t) 21:16, February 20, 2012 (UTC)

Full Support, but... - Can we add runes? :3 Adam SavageSpeech cursor 21:52, February 20, 2012 (UTC)

That would be ugly... Hair 21:53, February 20, 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, scratch that. How about... bolder colours? *works on something better looking* Adam SavageSpeech cursor 21:54, February 20, 2012 (UTC)
Made a version with updated gradient colours, here! Adam SavageSpeech cursor 22:59, February 20, 2012 (UTC)
i don't see the gradients in Opera or Firefox. --Iiii I I I 01:55, February 21, 2012 (UTC)
It's a wonder why the failbrowsers don't let the gradients show up... I don't know how to fix that. Maybe someone more versed in code than I could help? Adam SavageSpeech cursor 03:48, February 21, 2012 (UTC)
I fixed it for you so it works in Firefox. You set the start and end colour to be the same there, yet had it right for webkit. Anyway, I support the gradients. They look great, and it'll fall back to the original solid colour for non supportive browsers. Might wanna add IE's new code though, anyway, for that minority that can't use a real browser; see here. Hofmic Talk 06:24, February 21, 2012 (UTC)

Subjective oppose - The RuneScape Wiki is brown enough as it is. 222 talk 06:56, February 21, 2012 (UTC)

Question - Would anyone mind if I'd edit this page to do this? It would probably help in the search engine results (according to cook), and it wouldn't change the appearance. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 11:30, February 21, 2012 (UTC)

Oppose brown - I managed to glitch the skin to being blue which is not only better looking than the brown (in my opinion) it somehow cuts out the adverts in the background. All one colour, sure, but brown? Use some imagination please. cqm  14:53, February 21, 2012 (UTC)

First, that's not a "glitched skin", that is the default skin that Wikia provides. The whole point of our current custom skin was to create a RuneScape feel. Second, the adverts do not appear because it is in the calculator namespace, not on the main page. Third, I'd prefer shades of brown to the garish colors we currently have. If you think my design is unimaginative, you're welcome to create your own design. --Iiii I I I 19:58, February 21, 2012 (UTC)
I'd say it's glitched when it reverts to this when I open (not edit) my preferences. Pretty sure it's not meant to do that. Not forgetting the blue takes a few seconds to kick in after the screen loads.
They say don't criticise when you can't do any better, looking at Tip.it, Zybez and Sal's Realm wouldn't it be nice to go against the apparent precedent of having brown? Besides as others have pointed out it draws more attention to the 'interesting' adverts. cqm  11:28, February 22, 2012 (UTC)
I'll explain why that is. You're using the gadget that does that, which uses JavaScript, and doesn't load in your preferences. If you'd add @import "http://runescape.wikia.com/index.php?title=RuneScape:Theme/Oasis.css&action=raw&usemsgcache=yes&ctype=text/css&smaxage=18000"; to Special:MyPage/wikia.css it wouldn't be "glitched" like that (do remember to disable the gadget). Anyway, it's not glitched, it just loads with javascript that loads a moment after loading the page itself. Also, we won't make the main page blue just because one or two users use a blue skin. We don't officially support personal skin changes or monobook, so we choose a main page that fits with the default skin, which is brown. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 11:49, February 22, 2012 (UTC)
PS: The information of the gadgets's source pages can be found at MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 11:50, February 22, 2012 (UTC)
ty Joey :) cqm  13:59, February 22, 2012 (UTC)
I hate the brown theme, so I used made a CSS for the default Oasis theme. It's more or less finished, though there are a few last brown elements to purge. You can import RuneScape:Theme/Oasis.css to your wikia.css page to get rid of the brown theme. --LiquidTalk 14:03, February 22, 2012 (UTC)
Never mind, Joey already said that. I'll finish up the CSS sometime later. --LiquidTalk 14:05, February 22, 2012 (UTC)

Support - I like it and adopted it for my userpage as well. Time to have a fresh feel, even it if does draw the eye to adverts, random colors on the main page are just horrid. However, we should leave the majority of styles in CSS and not on the page, get's kinda scary looking when editing to be honest. Ryan PM 06:15, February 22, 2012 (UTC)

yeah, i'll move it to common.css tomorrow (or another administrator can, too). --Iiii I I I 06:48, February 22, 2012 (UTC)
Could you please first make it have <div>s instead of <table>s? JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 11:09, February 22, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - I really like Cam's blue links idea on the mainpage, it does break up the monotony of the brown tones! Adam SavageSpeech cursor 01:42, February 25, 2012 (UTC)

Pre-closure statement - Someone please come up with some new color codes to contrast the beige theme a little. Otherwise I'm closing this with iiiiiii's first example, and beige it will be. Urbancowgurl777 (talk) 20:52, March 24, 2012 (UTC)

I tried gold, although I'm not sure how well it came off. It doesn't tie as well into the site theme but it's the only thing I could think of that might work with brown an it's another issue entirely to suggest redesigning the theme to use another colour scheme. Note, I didn't insert my own version of , but you get the general idea of what it looks like. cqm  19:30, March 25, 2012 (UTC)
Altered it to show off the template in the proposed colour scheme. cqm  20:35, March 25, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - Made it more contrasting, now matches the colour we use for our navigation rail etc. Might be a bit too bold, but that's up to you. Feel free to tweak, revert, or whatever. <s>Calculator:MainTest/2</s>. Ronan Talk 21:16, March 25, 2012 (UTC)

I undid that change because it seemed rather bold. Flay's version can be viewed here. Hofmic Talk 21:25, March 25, 2012 (UTC)
Thought it was missing something so added box outlines, like so --Henneyj 02:26, March 26, 2012 (UTC)
I tried some shadows instead of hard outlines. cqm  10:26, March 26, 2012 (UTC)

Support - Henneyj's version looks excellent. --Aburnett(Talk) 06:34, March 26, 2012 (UTC)

I'd like to see some type of border or contrast around the "More events" boxes (etc), as well as the Updates area's headers, but I agree, Henneyj's version looks excellent, and support it as well. Hofmic Talk 06:43, March 26, 2012 (UTC)
Oh, and now that there's another version, I find Edmyg's shadows look the best out of all the proposals, so far. Hofmic Talk 14:07, March 26, 2012 (UTC)
Shadows work very well for smaller or single tables, but in the instance of our main page there are so many tables of all different sizes that they leak into each other and ruin the effect. Ronan Talk 15:06, March 26, 2012 (UTC)

Difference of 1 pixel - But support for Henney's revision. Ronan Talk 07:07, March 26, 2012 (UTC)

Request for closure - This has been open for too long, as evidenced by the fact that no one's bothering to comment on it any more. Fetus' theme received sufficient consensus for implementation, and now that it has been tweaked to make it more contrasting I don't think there's anything left to discuss. This should be closed and put into effect after April Fool's Day, to prevent even more disruption to our current main page. Ronan Talk 16:47, April 1, 2012 (UTC)

Closed - This version will become the new homepage after April Fools' Day is over (in one hour from writing this). Urbancowgurl777 (talk) 23:13, April 1, 2012 (UTC)
