AKA

I'll keep this brief. We have a bunch of awful abbreviations that we use for the aka parameter. Many of these add nothing to the article. I would like for us to remove stupid abbreviations ("pl8" to "plate") and things that are unlikely to be used to refer to something ("Body parts jar"? Really?).
We would of course keep the common abbreviations and ones that the item or NPC in question can not easily be identified by (SGS, DFS, ROL). We'd also keep things that are referred to in multiple ways in-game (Book of the Elemental Gloves and Marmaros among others).
I think removing the frivolous AKAs is the right thing to do if we want to get rid of some useless clutter in the infoboxes.

- Oh dear LORD, I remember that piece of shit of a redirect war...and I support. I mean, who the Hell is gonna call THIS a "gargoyle smasher" when they talk about killing them? Or at all, since usually, slayers don't converse about the items needed...

- Oh, and did I forget to mention that searching "moo" leads to the article Cow? Utterly stupefying, this is ridic.

- The moo one seems more like a rs wiki easter egg for the bored.

Support - Albeit I would rather see the complete removal of field. We'll still have thousands upon thousands of redirects to those pages, so I don't see a really big deal in keeping them. The only thing they are doing now is helping[Dis.] SEO, if we can call it that. Ryan PM 03:39, March 15, 2011 (UTC)

Supporting comment - Agree. It may be worth changing the wording on template:Infobox Item/doc to clarify the parameter is optional. I've always gotten the impression that people just put something because it's there and they feel like they need to. Admittedly an assumption but a reword would still add clarity. --Henneyj 07:04, March 15, 2011 (UTC)

Support - Yes, i agree we need to remove frivolous or redundant "AKA"s. But, how do we decide what needs to be removed...? One person may consider an AKA obvious while another could find it useful. To agree on something like this we'd need a wiki-wide policy on them, which would be incredibly hard to make considering the diverse range of NPCs/Items. And if we're just going for common sense, how do you think the "dumb" AKAs got there in the first place... - [Pharos] Professional party-pooper/nit-picker/hole-poker 12:27, March 15, 2011 (UTC)
Support - The AKA parameter is nice for items that aren't typically called by the full name. Although the removal of AKAs that don't make sense would of course be nice.

Comment/Question - I had a discussion with Ferg about what to keep or not. She said "Robin" should be removed from Robin hood hat, while I thought it should be kept because it is a common abbreviation. I can see that we shouldn't keep "Addy ..." for all adamant items or "Sara ..." for all saradomin items, but as the Robin hood hat is an unique item, I think for those cases it should be kept. (the reason for them to be removed was mainly that "you can guess what a robin is.") (other cases include Cracker, Divine and quite some other rare items) JOEYTJE50TALK 00:05, March 19, 2011 (UTC)
Closed - There seems to be unanimous support in favor of this proposal. Colloquial names that differ from the official name given by Jagex may only be listed if the two differ significantly and have notable usage. Suppa chuppa T C CVRC 16:17, March 24, 2011 (UTC)
