This article is about the elite rune dragon. For the normal version, see rune dragon.
[FAQ] • [doc]

Elite rune dragons are a stronger version of rune dragons, which are found on Mount Firewake, in Kethsi. The completion of the quests Ritual of the Mahjarrat and Fate of the Gods is required in order to access these creatures, and the dragons are accessible through the World Gate. They won the first RuneLabs poll, and were first announced in the June 2015 BTS.[1]

Elite rune dragons appear occasionally while the player is killing regular rune dragons. When one appears, the player is notified with a chat message. The dragon will fight the player only, unless three minutes have passed without the player attacking it, or if they teleport out of the area. When either of the conditions are met, any player can attack the elite rune dragon.

Elite rune dragons share the same mechanics as their normal variants, but boast higher combat stats. Care should be taken in longer encounters during its enrage phase, as they can reach the point of easily killing a player in one hit.

The Kethsi outfit scrolls are only dropped by elite rune dragons. Slayer tasks have no effect on elite rune dragons' drops; thus it is possible to obtain the boot upgrades or Kethsi scroll whilst off-task.[2] It is a guaranteed drop from "Barry the Destroyer", a unique elite rune dragon that has a 1/512 chance of spawning in place of an elite rune dragon.[3] However players will not get a scroll if they already have one in their bank or inventory.

Strategy[]

Armoured phase[]

  • Starts with 105,188 life points
  • Dragonbane ammunition is essential on this phase, as all other attacks, including those of familiars, deal dramatically reduced damage.

Flying phase[]

  • Starts with 69,424 life points. Any attacks during the transition will be reduced to 10% damage.[4]
  • The dragon begins flying and becomes immune to melee attacks. Dragonbane is no longer required to deal full damage. In addition, the dragon stops using melee attacks and replaces its standard dragonfire attack with the enhanced version.
  • Throughout this phase, the rune dragon may breathe a bright blue plume of enhanced dragonfire, dealing magic damage. This attack cannot be fully blocked by a super anti-fire or wyrmfire potion, and will deal a minimum of 450 magic damage. However, if the player is far enough from the dragon, a small cloud appears under the player indicating the enhanced dragonfire is being used and can be avoided by moving away from it.

Enrage phase[]

  • Starts with 34,712 life points. Any attacks during the transition will be reduced to 10% damage.[4]
  • The rune dragon gains a faint blue aura about its head crest after landing, indicative of this phase beginning.
  • It is again possible to attack the dragon with melee.
  • The dragon gets stronger with every attack. It stops using enhanced dragonfire and returns to standard dragonfire. It also starts using its melee attacks again.

Trivia[]

  • Barry the Destroyer, added on 22 June 2015, is a reference to an elite rune dragon nicknamed "Barry" that killed 32 players while stuck in the enrage phase on the day of release.[5][6]
  • On 11 January 2016, the drop rate of the Kethsi outfit scroll was increased from 1/2,048 to 1/200, and was made a 100% drop from Barry.
  • On 13 November 2017, the glaiven wing-tip, ragefire gland or steadfast scale drop rate has changed to 1/196 from 1/256.[7]
