Elysian spirit shield

A detailed image of Elysian spirit shield.

The Elysian spirit shield was released on 15 September 2008 along with the Summer's End quest. It requires 75 Defence and 75 Prayer to wield. The shield is made by attaching together a Blessed spirit shield and an Elysian sigil. To do so requires 90 Prayer and 85 Smithing. Also, players may instead ask Brother Bordiss to attach the two parts together for 1,500,000 coins after completing the Perils of Ice Mountain quest.

The Elysian spirit shield has a 70% chance of reducing the damage you receive by 25%. Without consideration of its magical effect, the shield is nearly as powerful as the Dragonfire Shield in defensive bonuses. On the other hand, it lacks the +7 Strength bonus the Dragonfire shield grants.

In another aspect, the Elysian spirit shield far outclasses the Dragonfire shield. The shield's special bonus makes this shield one of the strongest shields in RuneScape. Due to its damage-reducing abilities, on average, 17.5 percent of all damage taken from players wielding the shield is absorbed by the shield. Aside from the Divine spirit shield, which reduces damage by 30 percent with a 100 percent success rate at the cost of Prayer points, no other shield in RuneScape can reduce inflicted damage from all attacks.

Wealthy players may find this shield useful for surviving the special attacks of Dragon claws and Dark bows. It is also the best shield for fighting such bosses as Kree'arra. Currently, the shield is extremely rare and significantly more expensive than a Dragonfire shield. The shield is one of the most expensive items in the Grand Exchange (following the Christmas Cracker at 690,400,000 coins, the Divine spirit shield at 488,300,000 coins, and the Divine sigil at 482,900,000 coins). The Elysian spirit shield is the Grand Exchange's third most expensive non-discontinued item.

[edit] Trivia

In classical Greek mythology, there is a section of the Underworld called the Elysian Fields, or the Elysian Plains. This is the final resting place for the souls of the heroic and the virtuous.
