A Dying tree gives out normal logs when cut. They can only be found in Varrock and south of Varrock. There are some that cannot be chopped down near Castle Fenkenstrain that look just like dead trees. As seen in the name, they are related to dead trees. However, as the name also suggests, they are not yet dead.
[edit] History
The trees may have been alive in the 4th age, as that is when cities were being built. However, something may have happened to them later, as the examine text suggests. It may have been something to do with the graphics update of Varrock.
