A detailed image of the Dragon platebody.

The Dragon Platebody is an item that was released with the While Guthix Sleeps quest on 26 November 2008. It is the best non-degradeable platebody in the game and comparable to the Third Age platebody and the Bandos Chestplate. This item requires 60 Defence to wear, and level 92 Smithing is needed to repair the body from its 3 broken parts, along with 1 million coins for the purchase of a blast fusion hammer. On 25 March 2009, the dragon platebody underwent a graphical refurbishment to look the way it does today.

[edit] Repairing

There are 3 parts needed to create the Dragon platebody, they are:

After the completion of While Guthix Sleeps, it is possible to unlock the mithril door upstairs by the mithril dragons by using dragonkin key. This key can be made by using a half of the strange key (acquired during the quest WGS) on a mithril dragon, while both pieces of the key are in the player's inventory. This will fuse the pieces together into the dragonkin key.
Beyond the mithril door are three hanging dragon skulls, rib cages, and a giant orb in the centre. Using fire wave on each head will cause a flame to appear in their mouths and they will be moved towards the orb in the centre.
Once the orb is lit, the player can go back in the Ancient Cavern towards a corner north-east of the Green Brutal Dragons. Up the stairs, the player will find the Dragon Forge. It is here, using a blast fusion hammer purchased from the Foreman at the Blast Furnace for 1,000,000 coins, that the player can fuse together the three parts of the dragon platebody with 92 Smithing.

The dragon platebody DOES NOT degrade. Therefore, once the three parts have been combined, it does not need any further maintenance to preserve its statistical or aesthetic quality.

Note: Players DO NOT need to finish While Guthix Sleeps to wear the dragon platebody. However, you MUST complete While Guthix Sleeps in order to join the 3 pieces together.

[edit] History

The dragon platebody concept.

Multiple years before the release of the dragon platebody, spinning plates were released, joking that "dragon plates" (since the spinning plates had a picture of a dragon) were then available. With Jagex's joke, many players thought that such an item would never be released.

On 2 September 2008, a new banner was released after the Distractions and Diversions update, showing a female wearing what appeared to resemble a dragon platebody[1]. Also, an image representing the dragon platebody was posted onto the internet by an anonymous user, and resembles the one in the banner.[2]

There is also speculation that the dragon platebody was shown in two news post screenshots. The Clan Wars improvements was accompanied by an image of a player wearing what is believed to be a dragon armour body, although because the image is so small it is possible that it is a dragon chainbody. The PvP worlds update also revealed a screenshot, this time clearer, of what appears to be a player wearing a dragon platebody. Looking closely at the PvP picture, the piece of armour seems to have three horns on his shoulder. Even after the release of dragon platebody players were still not satisfied. People would rant on the forums how the platebody did not look "attractive" or "intimidating" enough for such a sought after item. On the 25 March, 2009 Jagex gave people the graphical update they asked for.

[edit] Trivia

  • The set of armour previously known as the (sk) was renamed as dragon chain armour set (l)/(sk) after the Platebody came out.
  • When it was released on 29 November 2008, the dragon platebody had a Grand Exchange price of 30 million coins. The price increased at the maximum rate for several days because some people assumed that the dragon platebody would be incredibly hard to get, but actually Tormented Demons initially had an extremely high drop rate of dragon pieces, and the market was flooded with dragon plates and dragon pieces, causing a crash at -5% per day from about 40m to about 12m.

  • When the platebody was first released, level 99 Smithing was required to smith the three pieces together. It also was not possible to use the assist system. Both of these requisites were adjusted within a few days of the release, with the new required Smithing level changed to 92 and the assist system can be used.
  • While wearing a skillcape with the Dragon platebody, the dark red part surrounding the neck is hardly visible.
  • On 10 February 2009, the Dragon platebody icon was changed from a slanted position to an upright position similar to the icon of the Dragon chainbody. The brown "belt" near the waist of the platebody's icon was also changed to a dark-red colour.
  • On the Grand Exchange Database, the image of the dragon platebody was not the same image as the one in game. On 26 February this was changed.
  • The old image of Dragon platebody: Image:Dragon platebody (old).png
  • On 17 March 2009, Mod Nexus said the Dragon plate nearly got updated, but kept back to fix some last minute issues between amulets and the platebody.
  • On 25 March 2009, the Dragon platebody received a graphical update. In the 3 days following that update, the price rapidly went up by 1.2 million, soon after the price steeply fell by 1.5 million.
  • Unlike all other platebodies, this one doesn't give negative bonuses to your ranged attack, making it good for tanking. On the other hand, it stops Ava's attractor and accumulator from working, so it's only good for Crystal bows or Karil's crossbow, as they always lose their ammunition.
  • In the knowledge base, the old inventory icon for the Dragon Platebody is still used.

[edit] Bugs/Glitches

  • When wearing a trimmed Hitpoints skillcape, one of the spikes on the Dragon platebody may stretch. This occurs if a player is fishing or doing anything else that moves the character in such a way.
  • While cooking with any Cape of Accomplishment the back part will cling to the air and pivot while you cook. This glitch can only be done on low detail in a non-members world.
  • While fishing your arm is floating in the air, pivoting, spinning around. This glitch was fixed at June, 09, 2009.
