The Dragon pickaxe is the most powerful pickaxe in the game and mines ores faster than the Rune pickaxe and the Inferno adze. After being the subject of many rumours over the years, Mod Mark confirmed that it was in development on 5 March 2009 (see RuneScape Q&A - Further Answers). Dragon pickaxes were released with the Forgiveness of a Chaos Dwarf quest on 9 September 2009.
To wield a Dragon pickaxe, players must have an Attack level of at least 60. To mine with a dragon pickaxe, a Mining level of 61 is required. Wielding or mining with the pickaxe does not require completion of Forgiveness of a Chaos Dwarf. Dragon pickaxes are dropped by Chaos dwogres, Chaos dwarf hand cannoneers, and Chaos dwarves at the Chaos Dwarf Battlefield.
As with all Dragon equipment (except the Dragon platebody and the Dragon sq shield), this item cannot be made using the smithing skill.

[edit] Price history
For the first month of its release, the Dragon pickaxe increased in price at maximum speed, multiplying several times in price. However, on 8 October 2009, 30 days after the release of the Dragon Pickaxe, it began to crash, after rising to about 19.3 million coins in 30 days from 4 million coins (the starting price in the Grand Exchange, set by Jagex. This is a 450% rise). The effect is similar to the one observed when the Dragon Hatchet was released. The Dragon Pickaxe has had the third largest price spike of all time, the first being Granite blocks, the second being Dragon Claws.

[edit] Special Attack
Like other dragon weapons, the pickaxe has a special attack known as "Shock". It drains 5% from an opponent's Attack, Ranged and Magic. This attack takes longer to perform than a normal attack. The special attack uses 100% of the special attack bar.
[edit] Trivia
- On the same day that the Dragon pickaxe was released, all other metal pickaxes underwent an unannounced graphical update.
- Before the update there was an image in the RuneScape banner of a dual-headed dragon pickaxe. A similar picture is currently used to show the special attack in the Game Guide, despite the look of the real dragon pickaxe. The picture has been recently updated in the game guide and is now up to date with the dragon pickaxe in-game.
- Strangely, some parts of the Dragon pickaxe resemble something made out of Obsidian, rather than Dragon.
- On the day of release, the Dragon pickaxe could not be found in the Quick Chat feature.
- The special attack of the Dragon pickaxe resembles the special attack of the Barrelchest anchor.
