Dragon dagger

From the RuneScape Wiki, the wiki for all things RuneScape

A detailed Dragon dagger.

The Dragon dagger is the strongest dagger available and can only be wielded by members who have at least 60 Attack and who have completed the Lost City quest. Dragon Daggers are affordable, fast, can be poisoned and have a knock-out special attack. These aspects, combined, make the Dragon Dagger extremely popular amongst players of all combat levels. Unlike most other daggers, they are held backwards, with the tip of the blade towards the back of the player.

The prices for the Dragon Dagger vary upon its poison level. The un-poisoned Dagger can be purchased in the Zanaris market place for 30,000 coins; from the travelling merchant Rasolo standing by the Baxtorian falls for 30,000 coins west of Seers' Village; and for 45,000 coins at Blades by Urbi in Sophanem, (only player stock) and at the Grand Exchange in Varrock

Alternatively, players with a high enough Hunter skill level can hunt Magpie Implings in the Impetuous Impulses minigame and potentially receive one as loot. The Dragon Dagger is also a drop from a few high-levelled Revenants, found in the Wilderness.

With the release of the Dragon Claws the price of the dragon dagger has dropped, and shows signs of continuing to drop. This is probably because the claws can hit harder (a +57 strength bonus compared to the +40 of the dragon dagger), are just as fast, and have an arguably better special attack. However, the sheer availability and comparatively low cost of the dragon dagger may attract players. Dragon Claws are also two-handed, much harder to get, and lack the ability to be poisoned. The claws can hit up to around 46-23-12-10 (92) under perfect conditions, which equals a 184 with both specials, while under perfect conditions the dragon dagger can hit 50-50 four times for a total of 400 damage from 4 specials. However, in PvP, these damages would not be possible. In Pvp worlds this weapon is the most commonly known one used. Dragon claws tend to be great when ones opponent is at low Hitpoints, as if they do not expect it, they can't survive through it. When PKing, a dragon dagger is highly dependant on the players attack bonuses and level.

As of 13 January 2009, the dragon dagger and all its poisoned variants are now split on Coinshare.

[edit] Special Attack

The Dragon dagger's special attack, Puncture, consists of two quick strikes at your opponent, with slightly increased accuracy and damage. High levelled players, if lucky, can hit over 100 with a single special attack bar. Due to the fact that the special only uses 25% of the special attack bar, even a high levelled opponent could be killed in a matter of seconds. This special is considered one of the best special attacks of the more affordable weapons in the game, and players will sometimes carry a dragon dagger in addition to their main weapon to cause 8 quick hits and a considerable chance of inflicting poison on their foe.

The maximum hit known with the dagger is 53-53, but this was done with a glitch called "Jullage". A player found a glitch that would let him combine the range attack bonus with his strength bonus, so he would wear armour with high ranged attack bonus and fair strength bonus to get over 200 strength bonus.

The highest unglitched special so far is 50-50 which was done using a Castle Wars bracelet. In normal conditions (e.g., in player-versus-player combat) 50-50 would not be possible.

Both Dragon daggers and Dragon longswords are quest items. You must have completed Lost City to use them.

As with all dragon items, with the exceptions for the dragon platebody and dragon square shield, this item cannot be made using the Smithing skill.

[edit] Poisoned versions

A detailed Dragon dagger(p++).
A player wielding a Dragon Dagger (P++)
Item name Exchange price Poison
Dragon dagger 30,200 -
Dragon dagger(p) 30,700 Weapon poison
Dragon dagger(p+) 35,800 Extra strong weapon poison
Dragon dagger(p++) 38,800 Super strong weapon poison

Dragon daggers are commonly used with their special attack to hit double times for four attacks, this is especially done with the poisonous version in PvP or Clan Wars.

[edit] Trivia

  • Formerly, the Dragon dagger(p++)'s suffix, as with all super-poisoned items, was (s). This was changed to what it is today in an update on 22 August, 2006 when Jagex alleged that it could potentially be confused with an admittedly uncommon nickname for Saradomin armour, rune (s).
  • Due to the longer suffix after the update to its name, the full name of the Dragon dagger(p++) became too long to use as an item name. Because of this, its name was shortened to Drag dagger(p++). When the Grand Exchange came out over a year later, many players were unable to find the dragon dagger(p++) because they had never noticed the abbreviated name. This lead to many players instead purchasing a Dragon dagger(p+), which was the best poisoned version they could find. The name was eventually changed back to Dragon dagger(p++).
  • When wielded, the Dragon dagger, along with its poisoned varieties, are the only daggers, along with Keris, to be held with a reverse grip (blade pointing downwards).
  • Saradomin Wizards from Treasure Trails wield dragon dagger(p++)s to prevent their attacks from being negated by any prayer, making them more difficult. If a player uses protect from melee, the Wizard will cast Saradomin strike, and if they use protect from mage, he will use the dragon dagger. Interestingly, the Wizard can cast Saradomin Strike while wielding a dragon dagger, even though players can only cast the spell while wielding a Saradomin staff.
