The Toy kite is obtainable by talking to Diango in Draynor Village, for 100 coins. The Dragon kite was released as an April Fools jokes by Jagex on 1 April 2008, "toying" with their players' anticipation of getting a Dragon Kiteshield, and similar to the "Dragon plate" and Cabbage Attack April Fool's pranks from previous years. The name was changed from Dragon kite to Toy kite the next day 2 April 2008.
According to Diango, a huge shipment of dragon kites was ordered exactly one year ago, but it was delayed, leaving him to believe that they were never going to arrive and that someone was playing a joke on him. He also explains, when asked how he got so many, that there was an offer of 'Buy 1, Get 1000 free' which Diango felt was too good of an offer to pass up. He refers to the price as a bargain and when purchased, cautions players not to "get carried away!" On November 9th, toy kites were prevented from floating away while playing Vinesweeper.
If the 'Wield' option is chosen, the kite will float along side of a player. If the 'Fly' option is chosen the player will appear, for a short time, to be flying the kite in a strong wind. The 'Fly' option will only be available if the kite is in your inventory instead of being equipped. Players can also click 'Operate' for the same purpose if the item is being worn.
When the kite is worn in the weapon slot, a player can:
- Attack mode: Player's character will "Punch" the opponent.
- Strength mode: Player's character will "Kick" the opponent.
- Defence mode: Player's character will "Block" the opponent; however, it still looks like a "Punch" dealing damage.
