This article is about the normal Barrows equipment. For the golden version, see Golden Barrows equipment.

A set of Barrows equipment in action.

Barrows equipment refers to a number of sets of combat equipment earned from the Barrows minigame. There are eight sets of Barrows equipment, each corresponding to one of the Barrows wights. When all pieces for a particular wight are equipped, a special set effect is granted which is different for each set. The set effects are detailed below and mirror the special attacks of each of the Barrows wights.

The six original brothers' sets are comprised of four melee sets, one magic set, and one ranged set. The armour requires 70 Defence to wear, and the weapons require 70 in the relevant combat skill (Attack, Magic, or Ranged) to wield. The armour bonuses are the same for these six sets.

The seventh set, Akrisae's, is hybrid (with a melee weapon), and additionally requires completion of Ritual of the Mahjarrat to obtain and equip. The eighth set, Linza's, is melee, requires Kindred Spirits to obtain and equip, and is of a higher level than the other seven sets - the armour requires 80 Defence to wear and the weapon requires 80 Attack to wield.

All of the items in each set are tradeable when fully repaired or completely broken, but not when partially used. Fully repaired items can be made into an item set by any Grand Exchange clerk.

In the The Fall of Six it is said that Sliske gathered the Barrows armour from "distant lands". As Ak-Haranu who sells bolt racks is from the Eastern Lands, it is quite possible that is where the Barrows equipment comes from.

Degrading and repairingEdit

Barrows equipment degrades as it is used. Equipment received from the Barrows minigame is fully repaired and can be used for 100,000 charges of combat until it degrades completely and requires repair before it can be used again; it does not suffer in performance as it degrades from fully repaired to fully degraded. The remaining charges of Barrows equipment can be checked by right-clicking it and selecting 'check-charge'. Additionally, Barrows equipment may only be traded if fully repaired or fully degraded. Items lose 20% charge if reclaimed from a gravestone after dying.

There are two ways to repair Barrows armour. Players can talk to any of the NPCs listed below and they will repair the items for a price, or repair the pieces themselves using an armour stand in any player-owned house for a reduced cost based on their Smithing level. The equipment can be repaired at any stage, and the cost will be adjusted according to how much it has degraded. The repair costs below are as if the equipment has fully degraded.

The following NPCs can repair the armour:

Armour and weaponryEdit

The armour and weapon of each set, apart from Akrisae's set, have the same stat bonuses. Nonetheless although Ahrim's and Karil's sets, for example, have the same bonuses, Ahrim's set, being magic, is weak to ranged weaponry while Karil's set is weak to melee. Also there are a few exceptions to this rule. The damage from Ahrim's staff depends on the level of the spell that is cast. Dharok's set is capable of doing extra damage because of its set effect.

Akrisae's set is Hybrid, rather than Tank, and thus has lower Armour bonuses but provides adequate defence against any combat style.

The setsEdit

Ahrim the Blighted (Magic)Edit

Ahrim the Blighted's equipment male equipped

Ahrim's set.

Blighted Aura: Successful magic attacks have a chance of lowering the enemy's Strength by five levels repeatedly. Contrary to popular belief, it does NOT lower your Strength by 10%.

Ahrim the Blighted's set requires 70 Defence to wear the armour and 70 Magic is required to wield the weapon. Ahrim's staff is rarely used as the set effect is generally not seen as a fair trade-off when other more powerful staves are available.

Dharok the Wretched (Melee)Edit

Dharok's armour set equipped

Dharok's set.

Wretched Strength: Maximum melee hit increases according to the amount of life points the wielder has left. The damage increase maxes out at 1 life point, at which point testing suggests maximum hit is increased by roughly 33%. This effect does not stack with abilities and does not have a 100% activation rate.

Dharok the Wretched's set requires 70 Defence to wear the armour and 70 Attack and Strength to wield the weapon. Like all the sets of Barrows melee armour, Dharok's armour provides very high defensive bonuses, and the greataxe is also very strong. Dharok's set is commonly used for its special effect, which allows for much higher hits than otherwise possible. As a result of its unpredictable burst damage, it is an extremely popular set to use in PvP, especially in Legacy mode.

Guthan the Infested (Melee)Edit

Guthans equipped

Guthan's set.

Infestation: Successful attacks have a chance of healing the wielder an amount of life points equal to the damage dealt. A hit for 2000 damage may heal 2000 life points. Also, a player on the Ancient Curses may heal with Deflected damage. Therefore, if a player hits a 2000, and their deflect hits a 500, and if both hits get the set effect, the player will be healed for 2500 life points. However, this is fairly uncommon.

Guthan the Infested's set requires 70 Defence to wear the armour set and 70 Attack to wield the weapon. Guthan's set is popular among mid- to high-level players for combat training, as the armour has very strong defensive bonuses and the set effect nearly eliminates the need for food. Situations where inventory space is scarce and a lot of healing may be needed, such as in the TzHaar Fight Cave, are ideal. It can even compensate for poison damage, negating the need for antipoison against some creatures, such as Kalphite Soldiers

The Guthan's set is used by many high-levelled players at aggressive monsters (such as Bandits or Dagannoths) to AFK (away from keyboard) as the Guthan's set heals them they do not have to be at the computer healing.

One important caveat: If you have low life points and no food remaining, it is not a good idea to wear Guthan's for healing. The healing is unpredictable, and subject to luck. If you're taking damage in the middle of a stretch of poor luck, you can easily die if you don't have a built-in cushion of life points. The only exception to this is if the player is training in an area where the nearby monsters attack with one combat style, allowing them to use protection prayers to block their attacks while using the set to heal themselves.

The recommended approach when healing with Guthan's is to equip the set when you have a medium or low-medium amount of life points left. That way there is little risk in dying, and eventually, after some time, the set will heal you back to full life points. At full life points, you can switch to a different weapon/armour if desired. When your life points are somewhat low, equip Guthan's set again.

Karil the Tainted (Ranged)Edit

Karil the Tainted's equipment equipped

Karil's set.

Karil's Taint: Successful ranged attacks have a chance of lowering the target's Magic level by 5.

Karil the Tainted's set requires 70 Defence and 70 Ranged to wear the armour and 70 Ranged to wield the weapon. As Karil uses Ranged, his armour gives a high Magic defence bonus, making it popular for fighting enemies with powerful Magic attacks, such as the Corporeal Beast. It also uses a special type of ammunition, bolt racks, which are a possible prize from the Barrows minigame and can be bought from Ak-Haranu in Port Phasmatys or on the Grand Exchange. The full set is not commonly used by players due to the lackluster effect of the set, which has no effect on NPCs.

Torag the Corrupted (Melee)Edit

Torag the Corrupted's equipment set equipped

Torag's set.

Corruption: Successful melee attacks have a chance of stealing adrenaline.

Torag the Corrupted's set requires 70 Defence to wear the armour and 70 Attack and 70 Strength to hold the weapons. The full set is not commonly used by players outside of PvP as it has no effect on NPCs, even those that make use of the adrenaline system. Using it within PvP, on the other hand, will provide a significant advantage. The hammers are crush types weapons, making them useful for enemies weak to crush.

Verac the Defiled (Melee/Prayer)Edit

Verac the Defiled's equipment (male) equipped

Verac's set.

Defiler: Successful melee attacks have a chance of dealing increased damage.

Verac the Defiled's set requires 70 Defence to wear the armour and 70 Attack to wield the weapon. Verac's set used to be the only set of Barrows equipment to give a prayer bonus with each part until the release of the Akrisae's set. Verac's set is useful for players who would rather do without the bells and whistles of the other sets while still being rewarded for using the set.

Before the Evolution of Combat, the set effect did not increase damage, but rather had a chance of hitting through targets' defences. This was particularly useful on monsters that use protection prayers, such as the Kalphite Queen and tormented demons.

Akrisae the Doomed (Hybrid/Prayer)Edit

Akrisae the Doomed's set equipped

Akrisae's set.

Doom: Melee and Magic attacks have a chance to restore some of your prayer points. This effect is similar to the Guthan's replenishing set effect, but in prayer.

Akrisae the Doomed's set requires 70 Defence to wear the armour and 70 Attack to wield the weapon. It also requires Ritual of the Mahjarrat to obtain and equip. The set differs from other Barrows armour, as it is a hybrid set. This means that the armour pieces have lower Armour bonuses than the other sets, but they will defend well against any combat style, and can be used with any style of weapon without suffering accuracy losses. The mace, however, is Melee styled and is required for the set effect. This makes fights against Magic users difficult. One can use powerful prayers provided by the set effect to reduce this disadvantage, however.

Graphical updateEdit

A new look was released at RuneFest 2011 showing an upgrade to the original 6 sets of armour. On 4 January 2012 the Barrows minigame was updated and the graves as well as the brothers and the equipment received a graphical update.

  • The price to repair Barrows equipment was drastically increased with the introduction of the Evolution of Combat.
  • Prior to the Evolution of Combat, each armour set had different defence bonuses.
  • Barrows equipment had a unique degrade mechanic of degrading in intervals of 25 (100, 75, 50, 25, 0) until 1 September 2015.
  • The requirement to complete Kindred Spirits wasn't immediately applied to Linza's set when it was released. So, if you purchased the armour from the GE and equipped it before the change, you'll need to complete Kindred Spirits to equip it if you happen to unequip it.
  • After Invention Batch 2, players can now use a whetstone to repair any Barrows equipment.
