[edit] Details

Official quest description: Troubling reports are arriving from scouts in the Wilderness: zombies are amassing and organising. Zombies alone are incapable of such intelligent behaviour, and each time it has happened in the past great tragedies have come to pass. Captain Rovin, suitably concerned, needs your help to go on a dangerous mission to verify the reports.

Are the Varrock Guard just being paranoid, or could this be a major threat to their city?

Release date: 29 September 2008
Start: Captain Rovin, North-west tower of Varrock Palace
Difficulty: *****
Length: Medium
Members only: Yes
Requirements:

Monsters to kill:

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

[edit] Walkthrough

[edit] Getting started

Illusion of Traiborn.
Zemouregal.
  • (Warning: This part takes you to the Wilderness) After speaking with him, head to the Graveyard of Shadows and talk to Hartwin. (Hartwin will follow you, including if you teleport to Clan Wars by using a games necklace). A cutscene plays, showing a trail of footprints trailing away from the graveyard.

[edit] Tracking the zombies

Items needed: Items to fight several level 85 Armoured zombies. Optional but may be useful: Weight-reducing items (such as Boots of Lightness and Spottier cape).

See Chaos Temple Dungeon for a map and description of the dungeon.

  • After the cutscene, use your Hunter skills to follow the zombie footsteps. The method is similar to the Hunter skill "Tracking". You may encounter several dead ends, where the trail seem to go in circles.
  • Inspect all nearby bushes, trees and bones on ground. You will find a Grubby key along one of the paths, near the forest of trees.
  • In the end, one of the paths will lead you to the Chaos Temple. Use the grubby key on the trapdoor in the back of the temple and enter the tunnels under Chaos Temple.
  • In the east of the dungeon, you find a ledge. Look over the balcony edge and you will see Zemouregal and Sharathteerk talking about allying with Lucien. Zemouregal rejects this and wants to attack Varrock very soon and gain possession of the Shield of Arrav, before he goes "to the north". An undead Arrav makes his appearance.
  • After this cutscene, continue down the cave corridor and pick up 3 bottles on the ground near the door blocking the corridor. Fight 3 Armoured zombies in the corridor and use the bottles to store the "Red mist" that appears when a zombie is killed.
  • You need 3 bottles of red mist each to pass through the next 2 doors. Do not bother filling more than three now, as the contents of the extra bottles will leak out before you can use them.
  • Go through the door. When you do, a cutscene plays. Arrav is in the room and he reveals that his mind is free but his zombie body is under the control of Zemouregal. He warns you of the danger Zemouregal poses to Varrock, and then he is summoned away.
  • Go down the corridor to the second door, killing 3 zombies to refill your bottles. Open the door.
  • Follow the corridor to another ledge, and look over the balcony edge to view another cutscene. Here you see that Zemouregal has raised an army of armoured zombies ready to attack Varrock. Arrav is also here as the apparent leader of the zombie army.
  • Realising the gravity of the situation, Hartwin hands you a Varrock teleportation tablet. Use it to return to Varrock and warn Captain Rovin. Hartwin will inform you that you no longer need him now.
  • Captain Rovin tells you that the Imcando dwarves made the shield and would know how to unlock its power. You happen to know the location of an Imcando dwarf and are sent to see him.

[edit] Ruins of Camdozaal

Items needed: Pickaxe, Spade, and a Light source. Items optional: Sextant, Watch, Chart.

The location of the co-ordinates.
The Sacred Forge.
  • Travel to Thurgo's Peninsula, north of the Mudskipper Point (Fairy Ring code: AIQ). The dwarf is located in his hut.
  • He will tell you to try and find The Sacred Forge in the lost dwarven hall of Camdozaal.
  • Thurgo will give you a scrap of paper with some co-ordinates to Camdozaal on it.
  • Before going to Camdozaal, head into the Asgarnian Ice Dungeon, located near Thurgo's hut. Mine a Blurite ore from the rocks located at the deepest part of the dungeon.
  • Dig a hole in the mountain around where the hole is shown in the picture right.

[edit] The Sacred Forge

Items needed: Spade, Pickaxe, light source, Blurite ore. Items Optional: Combat Bracelet (for fast teleport to Monastery), Redberry pie.

  • The co-ordinates should give you the directions to the Ice Mountain north of Falador and west of the Monastery.
  • Use the spade on the location just north-east of the White Tree. "within the shadow of the tree" (You dig a hole in the snow. Under the snow, you find there is a lot of rubble.) Continuing to use the spade gives the message: You'll need something better than a spade to get through the rubble.
  • Use a pickaxe on the churned-up snow (You swing your pick at the rubble. You clear the rubble, revealing a hole in the ground.)
  • With a light source in the inventory, enter the hole. Once down in the tunnel talk to the dwarf, Ramarno, within. (Optional: Give him a redberry pie to receive 1,000 Smithing experience.)
  • He explains The Sacred Forge can be used to accessed the dreams of Zemouregal, and will require the use of a Blurite ore.
  • Now that you have your blurite ore, put it into The Sacred Forge, and talk to Ramarno nearby. A dream-like cutscene ensues.
  • In this cutscene, illusions of Traiborn, Queen Ellamaria, Lord Rologarth, and the Wise Old Man appear and warn you of the attacks in Varrock. Zemouregal then senses that someone is accessing his mind and his illusion appears, warning you not to meddle and taunting you that it is too late, as his army is already entering a part of Varrock.

Boost can be used for Mining (Dwarven Stout with 58 mining, mature Dwarven Stout with 57 mining, shooting star or various summoning familiars etc, Check This page for more information.) and (Dwarven stout with 51 Mining or Dwarven stout mature with 52 Smithing). You will Not have to have level 54 smithing, just make sure to drink dwarven stout before talking to Ramarno.

[edit] Defending Varrock

Items needed: None, but avoid fighting zombies.

Zombies are attacking Varrock Castle.
The Shield of Arrav unleashing its power.
  • Now, quickly head back over to Varrock. Cutscene: the zombies will have already started attacking Varrock Palace. The undead Arrav seems to be in charge of the invasion.
  • Head to the third floor, and talk to Captain Rovin. He will give you the Shield of Arrav.
  • Climb down the stairs and head into the library, and talk to Reldo. (Note: If the zombies are preventing you from talking to Reldo, kill them off and lock yourself in the library.)
  • You will notice a book on a pedestal: it is the Varrock Census from the Year of 160, 9 years from the current year.
  • Reading the book will reveal the names of the citizens of Varrock and their occupations during that year. Then, search the scrolls on the floor on the west side to obtain the List of elders. The scroll lists the founding members of the Council of Varrock.
  • Some names within the census will match the name in the list of elders. Talk to the descendants with the Shield of Arrav in your inventory. The descendants are:
  1. King Roald, the King of Varrock.
  2. Aeonisig Raispher, the Royal Advisor to the King.
  3. Curator Haig Halen, the curator of the Varrock museum.
  4. Juliet, from the Romeo and Juliet quest.
  5. Draul Leptoc, Juliet's father.
  6. Romeo, from the Romeo and Juliet quest.
  7. Horvik the Smith, owner of Horvik's Armour Shop.
  8. Sir Prysin, one of King Roald's knights, from the Demon Slayer quest.
  • Everyone will try to wield the Shield of Arrav, but none will be able to activate its magical properties. However, one of them will tell you that they were adopted but that someone of the original family is still alive and married to a person of the Fitzharmon family. Note that the person who reveals this is random.
  • Talk to Dimintheis next to the Varrock Fancy Clothes store (the shop itself is located in the South-east part of Varrock, look for a Clothes shop symbol). After wielding the shield, he notices that the shield responds to him. He is revealed to be the descendant of the Elders of Avarrocka (Varrock).
  • In the cutscene that follows, Dimintheis will use the shield to kill all the zombies within the Varrock Palace. Noticing the power of the Shield of Arrav, and that their invasion of Varrock had gone wrong, Zemouregal flees the scene with Sharathteerk and Arrav.
  • After the cutscene, you appear next to Captain Rovin. Talk to him to end the quest, and receive your rewards.

Congratulations! Quest completed.

[edit] Trivia

  • On the day the quest was released, the spoilers were replaced with: The spoilers are currently hidden away for safe-keeping; tomorrow the zombie threat should have diminished enough to release them.
  • It is possible, that if you do not actually give away the shield, the varrock palace will still be "under attack". This could be used very usefully such as in pvp, when you walk in there, no one can attack you, although it still is considered a "pvp zone". This could also be used to have the yew trees all to yourself, thus there is a safespot between the first 2 from the west, from which the zombies can not attack you from.
  • Arrav is Level 180 in the quest. However, he cannot be attacked.
  • This quest proves the helmeted zombie in the "Attack on Varrock" wallpaper is actually Arrav himself.
  • When the zombies are attacking Varrock Palace, players may see the imprisoned Monk of Zamorak shouting "Kill those guards!" and "Someone want to get me out of here?" "Haha, mash those guards", "Let me out and I'll help with the invasion", "Oi, Mr. Zombie, Can you let me out?
  • When Dimintheis uses the shield, the lightning attack is similar to the attack that the Sorceress uses from the Diablo video game series.
  • When Dimintheis uses the shield, there is a part of the scene when you can see the Monk of Zamorak dancing and shouting "Yeah! Free finally!", then when the zombies start dying he says "Erm...". After that scene, he can be seen imprisoned again in his cell.
  • If you enter Camdozaal without a light source, after a few seconds a swarm of biting insects will begin doing constant one damage until you flee the cave, just like any other cave where you need a light source.
  • On the day of the release, a man from Ardougne named Clive appeared in Varrock castle. He can be found in the room north of Sir Prysin[source needed]
  • After the quest you can go to The Sacred Forge again, but the dwarf would not let you use it for Smithing nor using Blurite for another vision.
  • Zemouregal is another Mahjarrat who's stated that they're heading north.
  • It's possible to keep Hartwin for the entire quest, and even thereafter the quest! It's done by not speaking to him (when you're supposed to dismiss him after his work is done) after him having given you the teletablet. Having Hartwin accompany you does have some funny effects on cutscenes; like entering Camdozaal, where the player is seen crawling, Hartwin is just walking! However, after logging out after the quest is complete, Hartwin disappears.
  • Surok Magis isn't at all bothered by the zombie invasion, in fact, he seems more furious that you foiled his plans than the fact zombies are destroying his prison!
  • During the quest, Zemouregal's Right Hand man Sharathteerk will say "Your cousin Lucien is close to finding it", it is believed that this is in relation to the Stone of Jas/Staff of Armadyl.

[edit] Game & Cultural References

  • If you speak to the undead Arrav during the invasion, you can say "Talk to me, Arrav!" and "Don't ignore your mate, Arrav!". After he fails to respond, you will state "That normally gets people's attention." This is a reference to the Drunken Dwarf random event.
  • In the Varrock Census, there is a man listed as "Phearthee Levalsyx" (Fear the level six) under the profession "mugger." This is a reference to the level 6 mugger near Aubury's Rune Shop, often famed for killing macros.
  • Also listed in the Varrock Census is the student "Louisiana Jones" (Anna Jones), which is a reference to Indiana Jones
  • After seeing the Vision in Camdozaal the beacons will be lit in a red flame until the quest is done.
  • The track 'Dream Theatre' unlocked during this quest could be a reference to a similarly named popular progressive rock/metal band, Dream Theater.
  • Zemouregal's image and personality are reminiscent of Skeletor from "He-Man and the Master's of the Universe" animated series.
  • If you search the book on the floor when you are looking for the scrap in Reldo's Library, you will get a message in the chat screen, "These aren't the documents you're looking for." This is a reference to the Jedi mind tricks in the Star Wars films.
  • In the Varrock Census there is a Cart expert called Jeremy Clerksin. This is a possible refrence to Jeremy Clarkson the host for top gear, his proffession further hints at this as Jeremy Clarkson is an "Expert" on cars

[edit] Glitches

  • On the day after the release the knowledge base stated it gives 1 QP, though it actually gives 2.
  • Shortly after the quest was released, if you claimed the kudos at the museum after the quest, you would have accumulated 168/163 kudos. Jagex has since corrected this glitch.
  • There is a glitch when Hartwin lends a player a Varrock teleport tablet. If a player is already carrying a Varrock teleport tablet and your inventory is full, Hartwin will say you do not have enough space. However, once the player clear up a space, the tablet stacks with the one the player already brought.
