Crystal motherlode shards are items that originally appeared after every hour of skilling, in a player's inventory (or in the bank if inventory is full), while wearing the Crystal amulet (or shiny/sparkling leaf clover necklace from Treasure Hunter). They can currently be obtained by using a Crystal key on the chest in the Iorwerth section of Prifddinas.
When one was received by wearing the amulet, the following message was shown: "Your crystal amulet has produced a crystal motherlode shard."
They currently serve no purpose. Once the second batch of Prifddinas has been released, ten crystal motherlode shards can be traded to get a 'motherlode prize', similar to the rewards of reaching into the motherlode maw.
