The Cryptic Clue Fest IV is part of the Diamond Jubilee event in Varrock, which is held in honour of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. It is organised by Essjay in Varrock Square. It is a puzzle-solving event held in a similar nature to the original Cryptic Clue Fest, Cryptic Clue Fest II and Cryptic Clue Fest III, and this year it was created by Mod Timbo and Mod Drebin. It began on 1 June 2012. Clues were released daily on the Cryptic Clue Fest IV thread on the RuneScape Official Forums over the course of five days.

NPC clue[]

The white-star & blue-shield, they house the building you must visit. A furnace to the west, a range to the east - accost the officer therein for a minute.

Tips[]

Each paragraph of the item clue represents one item and roughly where to buy it. Look closely at the words in italics and try to extract a meaning from them to get a better idea of each item and its location. The words in italics are mostly Cockney rhyming slang (a dialect used in a specific part of London). However, some of them are RuneScape specific rhyming slang, such as place names.

Solution[]

Lor' luv a duck! I'm on me own to find me way to Edgeville to hop across the Wilderness Wall. Before I go I'll buy me a nice blue cape from Richard. Hope I don't end up dead.

Gawdon Bennet! I was standin' in the barber, in me favaaahrite town of Falador. I fancied a dance, so I decided ter visi' Party Pete and he gave me a pink afro.

Lawd above, while on me travels I ended up in Port Sarim where I find a great pub where you can find a free beer on the table! Nuff said!

The items needed (and their locations as given in the above clue) are as follows:

As with all clues, however, you may obtain these items however you wish, including from others players and the Grand Exchange.

Take these items to Essjay in Varrock Square and she will provide you with a Jubilee Basket to carry items relating to the Cryptic Clue Fest along with the first character clue. Take the Jubilee Basket and the required items to the Permit Officer in the Estate Agent's house east of Falador furnace. She will give you the contact clue for tomorrow's riddle.

If you have more than one of each required item in your inventory, you will not receive the proper response for the event.

Day 2[]

Item clue[]

Item 1

On the bush nearby the item, traces of an avian species was found as the items brushed past the bush

Whilst rummaging on the ground nearby, I caught a splinter in my hand which was curious - I was about 6 feet away from the nearest tree

The items had definitely seen some use and been weathered, a bluish rust was found at the scene of the hiding

Item 2

'Hidden' out by the Saradomin statue east of Varrock, the item was laid but when removed, a small damp patch lay where it sat

When the culprit removed the item, there was a struggle as if part of the item had solidified while trying to remove it

Part of the item that got left behind was a solid substance, it had turned a colour crossed between brown and orange

Item 3

Down in the Rimmington onion field the item was found, when removed again expensive gemstone dust was found

Whilst investigating the field, I found an onion uprooted with what looked like a stab wound

The crafty devil had covered his tracks with this item, I can't find anything other than the dust and the uprooted onion

NPC clue[]

Comestibles sold upon the shelves, a slammer and jetty nearby. Talk to the owner, and don't be a moaner, and the items he will surely supply!

Tips[]

Each set of three sections represent a single item which can be found around RuneScape. Each section is broken down into three paragraphs which give an insight into how we can obtain the item. Look at each paragraph and try to find key words which might represent something more. Each of these key words can be used to narrow down the possible items needed for that part of the clue.

Item 1

Each paragraph is broken down into one of the three materials used to create the item. A hint for this is that the item you need can only be made through a members skill.

Item 2

In this clue each paragraph is a set of instructions how how to create the item from another item. The first paragraph tells you to go to a place, the second tells you too mine something and the third tells you that you should do something to the item I've you just obtained.

Item 3

For this final part of the clue, each paragraph gives a description of the item. The first paragraph directs you to a certain area, the second makes reference to the item, and the third tells you what you can do with this item. Look at key-words in this section to get a better understanding.

Solution[]

Solving process:

This results in the following required items:

As with all clues, however, you may obtain these items however you wish, including from others players and the Grand Exchange.

Take these items along with your Jubilee Basket to Wydin in his food shop in Port Sarim (immediately north of the jail). He will give you the contact clue for the next day's riddle.

If you have more than one of each required item in your inventory, you will not receive the proper response for the event.

Day 3[]

Item clue[]

Cryptic Clue Fest IV Day 3 picture clue

NPC clue[]

Proprietor of ascending sol, a house for making merry. She'll sell you a stout, but she'll give you a shout, if it turns out you're short of a penny.

Tips[]

Cryptic Clue Fest IV Day 3 picture clue flipped

The map used in the clue flipped around the correct way.

Each of the four black dots on the customized map marks the location of where you can find this item.

The image itself represents places on the F2P world map, but it has been rotated 180 degrees; so what's north on the image is south on the world map, and what's west on the image is east on the world map. Also, names such as 'maze' reference Melzar's Maze and 'tower' references Wizards' Tower to make the clue more cryptic.

Solution[]

The items needed (and their locations as given in the above clue) are as follows:

As with all clues, however, you may obtain these items however you wish, including from others players and the Grand Exchange.

Take one of each of these items, along with your Jubilee Basket, to Emily, who can be found in the bar, in the Rising Sun Inn in Falador (south-west of the northern Falador Square).

If you have more than one of each required item in your inventory, you will not receive the proper response for the event.

Day 4[]

Item clue[]

Mod Timbo had invited 6 of the most prominent figures in all of RuneScape to a garden party, giving them time to relax in the sun with Wizard Mind Bombs and a buffet of freshly caught seafood from the coast of Catherby. Unbeknownst to each of Timbo's guests, it was a ruse in order to blackmail each of them into giving up their rare items without having to fight them first! Timbo had acquired secrets about each, they were:

Nomad - What people think is Nomad is actually a scheming Dwarf called Honeydew inside a mechanical suit
Nex - While she was young, she practiced the ways of Saradomin before converting to Zaros
Lucien - Only stole the Stone of Jas to impress a lady and it all suddenly got out of hand, but he needed to continue impressing her
Wise Old Man - Uses magic to convince everyone that he's old when he's actually only 24 years old
Lord Drakan - Has hidden himself from public view due to him enjoying Twilight and being unable to face another since
Bank Clark - Using his inner knowledge of the Bank of RuneScape system, he has been siphoning off cabbages to fuel his addiction to the delicious vegetable

Aghast with this news, each of Timbo's guests was filled with anger and embarrassment. Not wanting to cause a fuss at such a prestigious party, they each decided not to give Timbo a present that they were planning on presenting at the end of the evening. Using their combat abilities would have been too easy, but the denial of presents was something that they thought would definitely hit the right spot. The withheld presents were:

Nomad - An Iron pickaxe, the exact pickaxe that dug all of the underneath of Soul Wars
Nex - An Uncut sapphire, one of her favourite gemstones
Lucien - 10 Body runes, Lucien always thought a Disruption Shield would be useful in dire needs, but wanted to give them out to a good friend
Wise Old Man - A Cowhide, a reminder of the 'good old days' of Gielinor
Lord Drakan - A Meat pizza, not quite the diet of Vampyre lords but delicious nevertheless
Bank Clark - A Cabbage, as part of his Cabbaholic Anonymous program he needs to handle them without eating one

The party carried on; guests and Timbo alike drank Gnomish cocktails and continued to eat specialty Rabbit sandwiches from Burthorpe. That was until three blood-curdling screeches could be heard from inside of the mansion. "Murder!" the waiter cried, "Murder in Timbo Mansion!". It was true, three people had been killed and only the guests could be to blame! Timbo gathered everyone, staff and guests included, at the Garden Party area for an emergency meeting. "Friends and guests, we have a murderer loose amongst the house!" Gasps came from all present. An elderly maid fainted in the background. "I am afraid to admit that we do not know who or where these murders were committed. We're bringing in a crack team of investigators who will be able to solve this. Bring in... THE PLAYERS.

Investigate Kitchen
Kitchen - A simple kitchen fit for a mansion, pots and pans line the room as you enter in an orderly fashion aside from a couple that were presumably used for dinner. The main table island in the middle of the table lies strewn with cutlery, knives and chopping boards as if no-one had tidied since the last meal.
Investigate Ballroom
Ballroom - A jukebox sits in the corner of the Ballroom, stuck on a disc trying to change. The room is massive and the dancing floor shines as it covers the vast majority of the surface of the floor. There is nothing of note in the room or the floor save for the usual scuff marks from dancing.
Investigate Conservatory
Conservatory - A quiet room of solitude, Timbo used this room as his place to play RuneScape. A PC sits in the corner with a comfy leather office chair, the desk has a few assorted items such as empty soda cans. The rest of the room is sparse except for a table and a set of chairs.
Investigate Library
Library - A vast library sits at the heart of the mansion, three floors of bookcases strech as far as the eye can see. There are three wings of book types, a running record of all of the items left on the floor in RuneScape, every thread that has ever fallen to page 51 and the name of every player ever called a 'noob'.
Investigate Study
Study As you enter the Study, you notice that it's an extremely dark and slightly dusty room that hasn't seen much use. A grand mahogany writing desk sits in the middle of the room, on the desk you notice what appears to be unfinished writing of some sort.
Investigate Hall
Hall The grand hall of Timbo Mansion stands before with giant marble pillars and huge Gothic arches. Dressers litter the edges of the hall with doors to various rooms, occasional hatstand and painting on the wall.
Investigate Lounge

Lounge - A huge room opens up ahead of you, three 4-person sofas sit in the middle of the room with a low-standing table. An elaborate crystal chandelier sits off the ceiling, slightly slanted and the grand marble fireplace is roaring, heating the room.

Investigate Dining Room
Dining Room -It would be more appropriate to call this a Dining Hall, a resplendent dining table runs through the room like a wooden river able to sit up to 40 guests. It seems as if the laying of the table was disrupted, a pile of clean plates and napkins sits at the end. The head chair looks overly majestic, it seems as if Timbo is a bit pompous.

NPC clue[]

A man who deals in quality cloths, a person with whom you can barter. If you can handle the sand, just try your hand and see if he's got what you're after.

Tips[]

Study the original thread carefully. There is more to the words than meets the eye.

Solution[]

This is where the six guests were at the time of the murders:
  • Nomad was in the dining coom, carving in the wooden chair with his iron pickaxe.
  • Nex was in the dining room, and left her sapphire there.
  • Lucien was chased by Dragonkin in the hall and the lounge. (This totally breaks the canon storyline, and F2P players don't even know the relation between Lucien and the Dragonkin)
  • The Wise Old Man was in the dining room, and left his blue partyhat there.
  • Lord Drakan smeared pizza grease over the dance floor and drained someone there of his blood causing them to twitch.
  • Bank Clark's lack of magical powers make him the most likely to have struck the victim in the study with a blunt object.

The three that were together provide each other with alibi's so it must be the other 3, which gives the items needed:

Take the required items (and your Jubilee basket) to the Silk trader in Al Kharid. (Run north from the lodestone teleport.)

Day 5[]

Item clue[]

Clue 1:
We hear the prenom of Robert from 802 for this offspring. (3)
A shortened friendslist which is initially under royal oath ambiguously is milled. (5)
This drink is fit for a thousand Empress of England who is missing mad Mat, but has the K. (4)

Clue 2:
Aethelred roughly lost his quick elemental shield in this stitch up. (6)
Point north east as these eight kings take fifty east. (6)
Particularly tough Aethelred without Edward about for this armour. (4,7)

Clue 3:
Fifty opulent Georges initially a bit wooden (3)
Like copper the 500th Queen fights with fists for this firemaker (9)
This great can't read about the start of our own royal ground (6)

NPC clue[]

Of green complexion and a rather hooked nose, she has a curious smile. She can mix you a potion without a commotion, but her bubbling broth smells quite vile.

Tips[]

Each line is in the style of a cryptic crossword clue, complete with the number of letters each item name contains.

For each clue, think of something that is composed of the three items.

Solution[]

Solving process:
  • Clue 1
    • Part 1 - Not sure why Robert is mentioned here, but Egbert was crowned in 802. Eg is short for Egbert, and sounds like Egg.
    • Part 2 - "A shortened friendslist (FL), which is intially under (U) royal (R) oath (O), ambigiously is milled." FL+U+R+O is either a typo or an anagram for flour, which is indeed milled.
    • Part 3 - This clue mentions a drink. Thousand = MIL, and MIL+K=MILK. Not sure why the Empress of England is mentioned. Alternatively thousand could be M, and Empress of England without mad Mat would somehow be IL.
    • Egg + Flour + Milk = Cake
  • Clue 2
    • Part 1 - "Aethelred (THREADELE) roughly lost his quick elemental shield (ELE) in this stitch up." THREADELE - ELE = THREAD. Thread can be used to stitch something.
    • Part 2 - "Point north-east (NE) as these eight kings (there were eight kings of England/Britain named Edward so ED) take fifty (L) east (E)." NE+ED+L+E = NEEDLE. Needles are pointy.
    • Part 3 - "Particularly tough Aethelred (LEATHERED) without Edward (ED) about for this armour." LEATHERED - ED = LEATHER. Hard leather is a tougher version of leather.
    • Thread + Needle + Hard leather = Hard leather body
  • Clue 3
    • Part 1 - "Fifty (L) opulent (O) Georges (G) initially a bit wooden." L+O+G = LOG. Logs are wooden, and Jagex probably forgot that the ingame item has 4 letters, since it's always plural.
    • Part 2 - "Like copper (TIN) the 500th (D) Queen (ER - Elizabeth Regina, the current Queen of England) fights with fists (BOX) for this firemaker." TIN+D+ER+BOX = Tinderbox, which is used to make fires.
    • Part 3 - "This great can't read about the start of our own royal ground." = Ablaze (SOLVING PROCESS NEEDED)
    • Logs + Tinderbox + Ablaze = Ashes

So the items required are:

  • Cake Cake - can be bought from the Grand Exchange or made using the items listed above in a cake tin and then baking it on a range.
  • Hard leather body Hard leather body - can be bought from the Grand Exchange or made using hard leather and thread, you can also buy it from Lowe's Archery Emporium in Varrock.
  • Ashes Ashes - light a fire and let it burn out

Talk to Hetty in Rimmington in her house east of the well, when in possession of the required items (and your Jubilee basket).

Rewards[]

After solving all five clues, talk to Essjay, and a cutscene will show The Queen's arrival.

Then you will be able to claim the following rewards from Big Ben:

Diamond crown
Diamond crown Members

Diamond sceptre Non-members

You can also get the rewards from the previous 3 Cryptic Clue Fests. You can get all of the previous rewards by talking to Avalani who can be found at the Clan Camp near Falador, or Roddeck in Lumbridge. These items are

Trivia[]

Cryptic Clue Fest IV teaser post

Click for larger image.

  • Leading up to the release of the first clue, Jagex posted three short teasers, consisting of several "just for fun" clues for players to solve. These clues had nothing to do with the official Cryptic Clue Fest IV.
  • This is the second Cryptic Clue Fest to be a part of another major event. The first was Cryptic Clue Fest III, which provided a back story to the discovery of the Clan Citadels.
  • When talking to Wydin before delivering him his items on day two, he will be singing the song "I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts", a novelty song composed in 1944 by the English songwriter Fred Heatherton.
  • The phrase 'Riots Galore' was possibly chosen as rhyming slang for Falador because it has historically played host to a number of riots.
  • When you turn in the first set of items to the Permit Officer, she lists a set of documents that had to be submitted. One is The GPO-1337-33/A Form. 1337 is gamer slang for Leet or Elite. Furthermore, GPO stands for "General Post Office", the state postal system of the U.K. Although it is now known as the "Royal Mail", many of their official documents still use the General Post office, or GPO title.
  • The map given as an item clue for day 3 is a topological map, in a similar style to that of the London Underground. Three of the marked lines are the same colours as those of the London Underground map, specifically the Central Line (red), Circle Line (yellow) and Piccadilly Line (dark blue).
  • The Dwarf named Honeydew that Mod Timbo mentions is a reference to a well-known British YouTuber, Simon Lane of the Yogscast who portrays himself as Honeydew the dwarf for their series on Minecraft.
  • The day 4 clue is a reference to the game Cluedo.
  • Each of the character clues has a structure similar to that of a limerick, however they do not rhyme twice on the first line. Otherwise, they are the same.
  • If you solve the character clue for the next day you can actually get the response from them to confirm they are a Jubilee supplier.
  • The first phrase Hetty the witch says is a reference to the three witches in the Shakespearean play Macbeth.
