A Crossbow was formerly the weakest ranged weapon in RuneScape, along with the Phoenix crossbow. The Sling has since taken the title as the weakest ranged weapon in Runescape. It does, however, have the advantage of being wieldable with a shield, unlike long/short bows. It requires a Ranged level of 1 to wield, and can only use bronze bolts. The crossbow and Phoenix crossbow are the only two crossbows available in free play. However, due to their severe lack of power and ranged attack bonus, they are rarely (if ever) used.

Perhaps the most common use of the crossbow in free to play worlds is for rangers attempting to complete the Dragon Slayer quest. Equipping a crossbow allows the equipping of an anti-dragonfire shield, which is essential when fighting Elvarg.
