Crossbow detail

A crossbow is one of the weakest ranged weapons in RuneScape, along with the Phoenix crossbow. It does, however, have the advantage of being wieldable with a shield, unlike long/short bows. It requires a Ranged level of 1 to wield, and can only use bronze bolts. The crossbow and Phoenix crossbow are the only two crossbows available in free play. However, due to their severe lack of power and ranged attack bonus, they are very rarely used.

Perhaps the most common use of the crossbow in free to play worlds is for rangers attempting to complete the Dragon Slayer quest. Equipping a crossbow allows the equipping of an anti-dragonfire shield, which is essential when fighting Elvarg. Even then, it is almost never used for this purpose, as Javelins are stronger, can also be used with the anti-dragon shield, and also come in more accurate varieties for higher levelled rangers.
