The Clay golem starts The Golem quest. It has a small but important role in Shadow of the Storm.
It is one of the last survivors of its race (another golem is found in what remains of Ullek), as they were wiped out in the God Wars by Thammaron and his armies. This clay golem was part of an army of clay golems that finally destroyed Thammaron, but it couldn't save its race or the city of Uzer.
Interestingly, it seems to follow Isaac Asimov's First Law of Robotics, meaning that it cannot harm a human or allow a human to come to harm. This is because in mythology (usually), golems were constructs that were animated solely by magic for a specific purpose. This makes golems much like modern robots, albeit made of weaker materials (though metals were still used for golems), which seems to accurately describe the Clay golem.
