A cabbage is a consumable item, which can be obtained either by growing it on a Farming patch, from Melzar the Mad, or by picking it in various areas around RuneScape. Upon eating it, it restores 200 life points (the Draynor Manor variety also gives a 3 point Defence boost).
Cabbage is also an ingredient in garden pie.
The best known place to pick cabbage is the cabbage patch in the farm south of Falador. The explorer's ring 3, a reward for completion of the medium Lumbridge and Draynor Tasks, can be used to teleport the player there.
If cabbages are brought to Lunderwin at the Zanaris marketplace, they can be sold for 100 coins each (they must be unnoted).
A player is able to farm a cabbage at level 7 Farming. You gain 10 experience for planting the seed and 11.5 experience for harvesting the cabbage. It takes 30–35 minutes for the cabbage to fully grow. You can also have a farmer watch your cabbages for 1 sack of onions.

Cabbages are one of the first races brought to Gielinor by Guthix in the First Age. The first cabbage to have ever set foot on Gielinor received tier 7 godhood from Guthix and became known as Brassica Prime - god of the cabbages. Cabbages are very cheerful and playful, but usually they don't do anything and simply grow and die. Only once during April Fools did they celebrate the holiday by hailing their god and bouncing around the planet.

- During Black Knights' Fortress, the player overhears that the Draynor Manor variety of cabbage will complete an evil potion, and a normal cabbage is needed to destroy it.
- In Big Chompy Bird Hunting, a cabbage may be used as an ingredient needed to cook the bird.

- Cabbages are considered a running joke in RuneScape, as often players will joke about them. In fact, many Jagex Moderaters and even Andrew Gower seem to be obsessed with them. This is supported by a large number of references in-game, as seen below.
- If you farm cabbages south of Falador and attempt to exchange them with the tool leprechaun, she will reply ' A cabbage? Don't ye go showing me yer cabbage; this whole farm stinks of the things! Take it away and get it exchanged somewhere else.' This is likely to stop players from using the leprechaun to obtain massive amounts of cabbages like this. A good way to counter this would be to go to the leprechaun near the bar and have him note it.
- After the 2010 Christmas event Santa Claus threatens to give the player cabbage for Christmas if they reveal his identity.
- When a player tries to pick up a cabbage with a full inventory, a message appears which says: "You don't have room for this cabbage".
- During My Arm's Big Adventure, an adventurer is boiled alive in a cauldron with cabbages as seasoning by the Troll cook Burntmeat.
- During As a First Resort..., Balnea offers players the chance to partner in a lucrative new business venture. Players have the option to reply "I would rather fill my bank with cabbages" instead of accepting.
- Cabbage is also a codeword in Cold War.
- Members can occasionally find cabbage seeds when picking cabbages.
- In the earlier years of RuneScape Classic, the game's chat filter would dub the word "cabbage" over anything offensive, furthering the use of the stereotype.
- On April Fools' Day, 2007, a joke news post was released hinting at new "Cabbage armour" and a "Cabbage spellbook". The news post was removed the following day.
- On 2009 April Fools, cabbages started jumping around and there were a variety of ways a player could interact with them. For example, players were able to pick them and then wield them as weapons and able throw to other players if the other player turned on accept aid. The cabbages returned to normal the following week. Some players hoarded large amounts of these cabbages during the event in hopes that once the event was over, they would become discontinued items and sell for a large profit in the future. However, it has been made clear that there will never be any more tradeable discontinued items due to the impact they have on the economy (e.g. the cost of partyhats). This, however, has now been over-turned, with the release of the controversial fish mask.
- If you used a cabbage with another cabbage during the April Fools event you would get an interesting message saying "This is not the hidden message you are looking for". This is a spoof of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, when Obi-Wan Kenobi uses a Jedi mind trick to fool some Imperial stormtroopers. In the scene, Obi-Wan says "These are not the droids you are looking for."
- During the 2009 April Fools event, cabbages rose from around 5 coins to 23 coins in price.
- Currently Andrew Gower's friends chat is called 'cabbage'.
- If a player types "andrew" in the notes interface it will say "Cabbage" instead.
- Juna, a Guardian of Guthix, claims that the cabbage is a "vegetable of Guthix", due to its green and leafy nature.
- Upon eating cabbage, it will say "You eat the cabbage. Yuck!" However, eating a cabbage from Draynor Manor says "It seems to taste nicer than normal." and temporarily boosts 1 Defence level. This is because cabbage from Draynor Manor is enchanted, as learned during Black Knights' Fortress.
- If you ask the cook at the Blue Moon Inn if he has any food for sale, he will reply that he does have cabbage, and sell it to you for 1 coin.
- Brassica Prime is believed to be the patron god of cabbages.
- April Fool's cabbage could be equipped and taken into most areas that didn't allow food, such as the Fist of Guthix.
- Upon examining the Rellekka's Sailor (the one who takes you to Miscellania), it will say "He's strong to the finish, because he eats cabbage." This may be a reference to Popeye the Sailor Man , who gains muscles because he eats spinach.
- If you eat a cabbage during Unstable Foundations, you receive a unique message.
- Melzar the Mad is crazy about cabbages. He has dreams about them, writes poems about them, claims to use them in his magic, and is capable of summoning them while in combat (although this does nothing to his advantage)
- Since cabbages are extremely easy to obtain, players will sometimes collect large amounts of them and drop individual cabbages over a large area. This joke is known as "cabbage-bombing".
- Arnold Lydspor gives you an cabbage if you say that you just came here for chatting. He says that cabbage is good for the player.
