The Broomstick is an item given by Maggie in Swept Away, the 2008 Hallowe'en event quest. She asks players to enchant it by bringing it to three witches: Hetty in Rimmington, Aggie in Draynor Village, and Betty in Port Sarim. Note that Hetty does not enchant the broom, but gives the broom ointment so that players may enchant it themselves. If destroyed, it can be given back by Maggie, not Diango.
The broomstick can be wielded in the Weapons slot, however the attacks are the same as if you were unarmed. In addition, the broomstick may be used to sweep just like any other broomsticks. To do this, players simply have to use the "Sweep" option by left clicking the broom.
The broomstick is one of the few items allowed by the Saradomin monks upon the island of Entrana.
This item was the reward for Hallowe'en 2008 after coming a very close second in the guaranteed content poll (started on 18 June 2007) for the 2007 Hallowe'en event. The winning choice at that time was the grim reaper hood with 85,619 votes, but "a broom that can sweep or be hovered on" was a very close second with 85,354 votes[1]. The broomstick was subsequently made the reward for the following year, with no similar poll in the interim.

[edit] Upgrading the broomstick
When the broomstick "Operate" option is used in the Equipment window, a message will tell players that "You don't yet know how to operate this item". Players can upgrade it to allow unlimited flight to the Sorceress's Garden (except past level 20 Wilderness), and to gain extra experience points in Magic. This experience comes in four separate one-off bonuses, each one being worth more than the last, but requiring a higher Magic level each time. Once it has been enchanted, instead of the 'Operate' option when wielded, there will be a 'Sorceress's Garden' option.
[edit] Flight to the Sorceress's Garden
Members who have completed the Prince Ali Rescue quest can upgrade the broomstick by taking it to the Sorceress's Apprentice in south-east Al Kharid. After this, they may use the broomstick to fly to the Sorceress's Garden by operating it. Like most teleports, it does not work past level 20 Wilderness. The broomstick does not have charges or a daily use limit, so players can use it as a fast and free way to reach Al Kharid by flying to the Sorceress's Garden, and then clicking on the fountain there to exit.
Note: The flight enchantment is only attainable if the player has talked to Maggie about further broom enchantment and Osman about the Sorceress and sq'irks. The completion of the quest, Prince Ali Rescue, is also a requirement for enchantment, as it is needed to gain access (and, indeed, knowledge) of the Garden in the first place.
In the 2008 Christmas event, it is possible for players to use certain teleports (such as Lumbridge Home Teleport) and have a snow imp follower stay with them. However, this does not work with the broomstick's flight function. No follower can be taken on a broomstick flight.
Even if were previously a member and enchanted the broomstick during that time, you would still receive the message: "You need to be on a members' world to use this item." if you attempted to operate it.
[edit] Bonus Magic experience
With the indicated minimum Magic level, if you talk to Ali the Hag in Pollnivneach, the Old Crone near the Slayer Tower, Baba Yaga on Lunar Isle, or Kardia in the Underground Pass you will get a "boost to your magic experience"
NPC Magic level Reward Sorceress' Apprentice in Al-Kharid 1+ Ability to operate the broom to teleport to the Sorceress's Garden. Ali the Hag in Pollnivneach 33+ 1,997 Magic Experience The Old Crone near the Slayer Tower 53+ 7,139 Magic Experience Baba Yaga on Lunar Isle 73+ 10,338 Magic Experience Kardia in the Underground Pass 93+ 14,979 Magic Experience
The Ring of slaying can get you very close to Ali the hag via the Sumona teleport, very close to the Old Crone via the Slayer Tower teleport, and somewhat close to Baba Yaga via the Slayer Caves teleport.
[edit] Bugs and glitches
- Players were able to take Boxing gloves and other POH Combat items out of their house by operating the broomstick with the boxing gloves in their inventory, flying them out of the house and to the sorceress' garden Minigame, with the items still in their inventories. Also, Pugels were non-equippable using this method, but if a player were to look at their combat item bonuses, they could "Wear" the Pugel, but to no avail.
- After the 2008 Hallowe'en event was over, the Swept Away quest was made members only and non-member players were unable to retrieve their broomstick if they lost it. However, Jagex fixed this on 26 November 2008 by allowing Wendy to teleport players to Maggie in the magical area visited during the quest.
- There is a glitch in where when you are a monkey via a monkey greegree, and use the broom, the monkey will not hold the broom, but dust clouds will appear.
- There is a glitch where a player can be on the broomstick and walk around.
[edit] Notes
- When used in conjunction with the other infinitely-charged teleport item the Explorer's Ring 3, and with exactly twenty-eight coins, a member who needs to gather vast amounts of Newt's eye cheaply for Herblore can teleport back and forth with both items (utilizing the Bank chest at the Shantay Pass and the Port Sarim magic shop), you can fill your entire inventory with newt's eyes. Note: Be sure to wield both Broomstick and Explorer's Ring before retrieving money in order to maximize inventory space; this method can be used as many times as you desire.
- The broomstick is useful for bringing the player close to a bank (for storing and retrieving items), a musician (for quickly recharging hitpoints and run energy), and reasonably high-level attackable NPCs which drop bones.
- You cannot receive the broomstick back from Diango, as it is not really considered an actual Holiday item, but a Quest reward released with a Holiday Event. You must visit Maggie (or Wendy, if you are a free player), if you ever wish to regain possession of the broom. Maggie will claim that "someone came across it in their wanderings and thought to return it" and will ask the player to look after it better now, saying that the broom is "a pretty special little jobbie".
