A Book of Knowledge is a possible reward from the Random event gift. It gives you experience equivalent to your level in a skill times 15. Compared with a genie lamp, which only gives the experience equal to the level times 10, the book of knowledge is 50% more potent. Many people use this kind of book to level up skills that are hard or expensive to level up, such as summoning, construction, slayer, runecraft, prayer, herblore and farming. For F2P players it is recommended to level up prayer.
If you try to bank it, you will receive the message "A magical force prevents you from banking this item!"
Before the random event gift was released, If a player still has a Book of Knowledge in their inventory, it is very unlikely but not impossible for a player to receive the Surprise Exam! random. However, the player will only retain one book of knowledge if they presently have one in their inventory.
Before the aformented update, if no inventory space is available, the book will actually be left on floor. But once it is picked up it is impossible to put it down again. However the "Book on floor" pheonmeon is discontinued, as the gift will provide space for the book.

The Book of Knowledge is presented as the tome of experience, since a player has proved his or herself capable of solving the multiple questions presented by the dragon Mr. Mordaut.
