Big bones are items associated with the skill prayer. Big bones give 15 experience points when buried. This is over three times as much experience as bones, making big bones an extremely popular method of training prayer in free-to-play.They are dropped by normally large monsters, such as any sorts of Giants, Giant Frogs, Ogres etc. The only free-to-play monsters that drop big bones are: hill giants, moss giants, and ice giants.
Previously the price skyrocketed for big bones, most likely because of merching clans. Collecting them in the wilderness Bone Yard and selling them was also one of the quickest non-merchanting ways to make money available for non-members. However, Clan Wars was built over the Bone Yard's location on 10 December 2007, reducing the only supply on big bones respawn for free players.
Big bones can be sold at the Grand Exchange for anywhere around 300-400 making it great way to make money. Similarly, bones have steadily increased in price on the GE: starting at 26 coins and currently a little less than 100 coins. This is most likely due to the discrepancy in price and experience between bones and big bones, with big bones priced at about 340 coins while yielding only 3 times the experience. However it is unlikely that bones will climb past 100 coins as the experience to cost ratio advantage would disappear.
Members can get big bones from the 'gamble' option when purchasing rewards at the Soul Wars arena, but they are likely to not get them. If they do get them, they will likely get them in quantities of 60 or more.
[edit] Tips
- For Members who have completed the Biohazard quest, there is an incredibly fast way to get big bones, made even faster if you have 51 magic. In the Training Ground North of Ardougne, many players train range quickly, so they leave the big bones from the ogres on the ground. Enough Ogres are killed that there will be a massive supply of big bones.
- The fastest way possible would probably be collecting the big bones dropped by Cyclopes in the Warriors' Guild. However, this requires 10 Warriors' Guild tokens per minute, and also an attack level + strength level sum of 130 or greater, or an Attack or Strength level of 99.
- Twice as much exp per gold can be obtained through using big bones on a gilded altar rather than the traditional dragon bones, although this method is more time consuming.
- For free-to-play players, the fastest way to get big bones is the from hill giants located in the Edgeville Dungeon, to get easy access to these hill giants the player needs a brass key which can be found inside the Edgeville Dungeon or bought at the Grand Exchange.
- For players training prayer, its actually better to sell these big bones then use the money to buy regular bones. Based on current middle-market prices (13th Nov), selling 10 big bones can ether generate 5070gp OR 150 prayer xp. If players invest 5k in regular bones, they can buy 45 for that money which, when buried, generate 202 prayer xp... 33% more. Of course if you can sell big bones for max price and/or buy small bones for minimum price, the prayer xp is increased further.
[edit] Trading
- Apart from the Grand Exchange, the fastest method by which one can sell big bones is usually by entering a populated area, such as a bank, and advertising their sale in the public chat. Advertisements should try to include the quantity of bones and the desired price so as to avoid confusion. Selling the bones in this manual fashion allows one to garner the added benefits of possibly acquiring more gold for their bones. (Since the advent of the Grand Exchange this is largely an archaic practice; few players actively search for others selling items in banks any more, as the grand exchange prices are almost always cheaper)
