Armoured zombie

From the RuneScape Wiki, the wiki for all things RuneScape

Armoured zombies are level 85 undead monsters encountered during and after the Defender of Varrock quest. There are three varieties - ones which attack with a scimitar using melee, ones which attack with a battleaxe using melee, and ones that attack with throwingaxes (thereby using Ranged).

When one of these zombies is killed, "A strange red mist rises from the dying zombie." This mist must be captured in a bottle (found in the dungeon) to proceed farther within the dungeon during the Defender of Varrock quest. Thereafter, the red mist does not need to be captured.

They are classed as a zombie, therefore giving Slayer experience when killed during a task. Because zombies are undead creatures, a Salve Amulet (e) is very helpful when fighting these creatures, and the Crumble Undead spell works against them, even though melee is strongly recommended.

They are also a good monster to train on as they commonly give 70,000 to 90,000 experience an hour (including Hitpoints experience), even up to 100,000xp/hr depending on stats and boosts.

This is because you can use piety as there is an altar, the Dragon battleaxe Special attack with a restore potion (or just using super strength potions) as well as a Salve amulet (e). This gives a total bonus of +58% Strength, +40% Attack and +25% Defence

[edit] Tactics

An abyssal whip coupled with a Rune Defender or a Dragonfire Shield is excellent. Players wishing to train strength should use a godsword or Saradomin Sword for maximum experience, however a dragon scimitar works well for many. Bandos armour, (Bandos tassets and Bandos chestplate) is recommended, but not vital. Barrow's equipment is only recommended if the player has sufficient funds to repair it. Players with higher defence levels may find rune or dragon armour sufficient, however dragon body pieces are rather expensive so you may replace it with a fighter torso or a rune platebody. The Super strength potions or Dragon battleaxe special along with restore potion and/or super attack potions are recommended for maximum xp/hour. Head back up the ladder when you have around 5 prayer points left and recharge at the altar, then immediately climb back down. When they become tolerant of the player, run around the corner nearby to the other group of zombies, and then head back to the area of the ladder. Having them attack you automatically is needed for this training to be efficient. Pick up all stackable/noted drops, (charms, all types of planks, pure essence, Runes, and mithril arrows, except for Eye of Newts and Cosmic Runes.) For maximum xp/hour don't bury bones or mess with the herbs lesser than ranarr weeds. Pick up and save the ranarr weeds. These zombies frequently drop noted planks and runes, players may find them a decent source of money, over 150k gp per hour.

[edit] Killing Methods

Here are the two most popular methods of killing armoured zombies.

[edit] Protection Prayers

The player may use protection prayers to kill the zombies, because of the altar located directly above them. The zombies use both ranged and melee attacks, so some attention must be paid. Players may also use skill-boosting prayers such as Piety and Chivalry to increase the experience gain.

[edit] Tank Method

The player may also tank the armoured zombies. By using strong defensive armour, such as Bandos armour or Barrows Equipment, coupled with a healing familiar, such as a Bunyip, there is no need for protection prayers or food. Bandos is advised due to the fact that it doesn't degrade, but it is not vital. Of course, the player can still use boost prayers such as Piety to increase the overall experience gain. Bring around 2-3 void spinners, bunyips or a better healing familiar, one summoned when players head out. This means players need something to restore summoning points, so a summoning potion 4-dose is needed. A super restore can do the same job. In addition to the familiar's healing ability it might also be wise as to bring an enhanced excalibur for extra healing to remain in the dungeon even longer. Always plan to have piety or chivalry on, and watch your prayer points. Climb back up the ladder at around 5 prayer points remaining.

[edit] Trivia

  • "This one hasn't quite got round to dying" is a reference to Monty Python's Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
  • They seem to be wearing a mangled-up version of the Elite black armour.
  • There was and is still a glitch where sometimes the player will kill an Armoured Zombie, and there loot will be floating on top of the red mist. This glitch has still not been fixed.
