Away from keyboard training
From the RuneScape Wiki, the wiki for all things RuneScape
Macroing (also called botting) is the practice of using a 3rd party software to gain any unfair advantage of over players.
Macroing is strictly not allowed, and is against the Rules of RuneScape under Rule 7 (Using Third Party Software). Also using ingame mechanics to stay logged in while AFK is against this rule Jagex states: "AFK training is Away From Keyboard training. While you are playing on our games, you must be at the computer. Away from keyboard training is not allowed, and you should log out when you leave the computer." Though AFK training is against the rules you won't get banned sleeping at the keyboard.(said by a Jagex Moderator)[1]
One of the reasons for random events was to discourage Macroing. Players who encounter a random event when not paying attention are likely to log out.
[edit] Is Someone Macroing?
If you think somebody is using a bot but aren't sure, here are some things to look for:
- Doesn't respond to the public. See note below
- Constantly says BRB and AFK (Be right back and Away from keyboard)
- Some macro programs are coded to respond to certain commands, for example, if a player says "Wc lvl?" the macroer may respond with something like "Embarrassingly low". Of course, this can't always be used unless it responds in a bot-like way such as responding instantly when you ask it, or continue to say it when you continue to ask the same question.
In some cases, a player may not be an macroer, but doesn't respond to the public or goes off and finds a new object. Those people may be doing other things such as messaging RuneScape friends. They might also have, for whatever reason, disabled public chat, or never enabled it since originally creating their character.
[edit] Rule 7
Macroing can be reported under Rule 7 - Third Party Software (although it's important to note that they may not really be using third party software -- they may be AFK but are still logged into the game because they are continuously in combat, perhaps from a quick-respawning aggressive NPC).
Many players keep their public chat Off or on Friends, which may be the reason why they do not respond. If a player seems to suddenly disappear and reappear, check if the player is truly logging out and in and not merely being hidden under another player or NPC. Remember these things before you report someone.
